Task - What Happened to the Coastline? Introduction

From atop the crow's nest, One-Eyed

Josephine hollers, "Land ho, port side!"

The crew members drop their mops and

buckets to race to the left side of the

ship. You slowly lower your face into your

hand. "Your other left, port side refers to the left side of the ship." Josephine was

correct; to the west you can make a

series of landmasses, or islands.

"Welcome to the Caribbean Sea mateys," the Captain says with

a smile. "Weather permitting, it's approximately seven good

sailing days to Florida. There's but a few items left for you to

tend to aboard the ship. For those of you that like coffee,

there are many coffee-producing countries here in the

Caribbean. If you want a pit stop at any of the islands you can

get some duty-free coffee beans."

As the ship approaches the Caribbean Islands, you notice the

beaches aren't what one might expect: the beaches are thin

and there's a lot of housing and development along the

coastline. There are many man-made structures constructed

in the water in attempts to modify the coastline, such as

jetties and groins. Oh dear, what is happening?

6. During what month of the year would you expect the

berm on the beach to be largest? Why?

7. What are the two primary sources of all beach sand

globally?

Your neighbor builds a groin. You are down current from

the groin. What will happen to your beach? What are two

2. Which of these coastal structures is installed specifically

to create protected low-energy water for boats?

A. seawall B. jetty C. groin D. breakwater

3. Which of these coastal structures results in bigger

beaches in a particular location?

A. seawall B. jetty C. groin D. breakwater

5. Which of these coastal structures results in increased

wave height in a particular location?

A. seawall B. jetty C. groin D. breakwater

6. Which of these coastal structures requires continued

maintenance?

A. seawall B. jetty C. groin D. breakwater

Drawing in the Sand Draw a picture of a beach with a groin constructed near a

beach resort hotel. Be sure to clearly indicate where the sand

accumulates, where it erodes, and the direction of longshore

current. List two reasons why the resort would want to build a

groin. List two negative side effects of building the groin.

Creativity and originality can earn you extra credit.

How to Submit Your Task Answer the Task Questions on a word processing document

and submit the document to the Captain's dropbox.

Answer the Quiz Questions in a separate word processing

document and use your answers to complete the Coastlines

Quiz. Beware the letters in the list of answers above may not match the letters in the list of answer on the quiz. There will be more quiz questions in addition to these, be sure you

understand the material in the log book.
