2 1 1 It was the best place to go for help, compared to friends. 1 1 organizational assistance, APA formatting for citations, such as in-text and reference
2 2 I wish it were more available to evening students. Resume, cover letter, professional statement assistance. Maybe workshops.
1 1 2 For my statement of purpose for applying to WWU's MBA program 1 Editing for typos and general grammar / sentence flow was very helpful
2 1 1 For research paper 2 2 Writing and grammar
1 2 Good tool if you’re having a hard time with a project. 2 Editing, both for mechanics and help with flow and content. Also a quiet-ish place to focus.
1 1 1 Citation information 1 1 Peer editing
4 Grad 2 I am in Evertte at the satellite program.... Do I have access to this? 4 I would love someone to proof read my papers!
2 2 I am glad they're around for people but I don't have time or feel the need to seek assistance 1 If I could email a paper and get feedback by email I would probably have sought assistance at some point. If I had known it was an option. (Which honestly I never considered.)
1 2 2 Assistance with structure and research
1 1 1 Feedback & Reference suggestions 1 1 workshops
1 2 I think they can be useful for students who would like assistance with writing, and should be offered. 1 I can't think of anything for myself -- I have been writing a long time and feel confident in my skills in that area. However, I could see at some point wanting someone to proofread or bounce a draft off of.
4 4th 2 I wonderful resource 1 Research assistance, formatting assistance (citations,etc.)
2 2 They seem like a great resource for those who need help, and I would use one in the right situation. 1 Proof reading. Organizing a paper.
2 2 I have heard the writing center to be very useful to a fellow cohort member, but I have not personally utilized the writing center. 1 I would like to get a thesis partner and more help/motivation next year when I will be doing the majority of my writing.
3 1 1 I heard about the Thesis Partner program during first-year orientation and thought it would be useful to keep momentum and set deadlines. 4 5 1) Review of drafts by someone familiar with scientific writing, particularly the current trend away from passive voice. 2) a quick and easy to look up formal details, e.g. the current Council of Science Editors standard for using "Oxford" commas.
2 2 I don't think I necessarily trust that people at the writing centers would be able to help me improve my writing because of the technical nature of my research. Also, I have never heard of any faculty recommending the writing center except to students who have trouble with things like basic grammar and syntax, or students who do not speak English as a first language. That doesn't give me much confidence in the writing center's ability to help me craft a convincing fellowship proposal, grant proposal, or thesis. But I guess I don't really know because I've never used them. 3 I don't know.
1 2 Useful, but limited as writing center workers may not have knowledge in the field of what I need help writing. 3 Thesis edits and structuring, CV tips,
1 1 1 To get help on writing my proposal for my thesis 2 2 one on one work time, line edits, general feedback
4 Final Year 2 Useful for learning 1
3 1 1 To have a second reader 1 1 I see the value on the online writing center. It provides freedom not only for the student, but also for the writing tutor. (I've been both)
1 1 2 They were workshops I took in my courses 2 Peer review - someone checking for edits, flow, and that my writing makes sense to those not in my field.
2 1 2 As part of a class 2 Editing mostly
1 1 1 For support with narrowing down my research topic 1 1
4 Finishing up year 4 2 I think they can be very useful when students choose to use them. 2 Technical editing in specific disciplines, general editingfor continuity, etc.
1 2 Helpful for those with less experience writing 3 I have a strong writing background and am provided appropriate feedback from my peers and advisers. I can imagine receiving feedback beyond spelling/grammar would be difficult from an umbrella writing center.
1 2 4
1 1 1 To help write my thesis proposal 2 2 Guidance in planning and setting deadlines for important documents, such as a thesis or proposal; Identifying common writing patterns; Tips and feedback on how to make my writing better
1 2 3 Proofreading and structural/organizational advice regarding my writing.
2 1 1 thesis partner and class workshops 2 2 writing help
2 1 1 Graduate Student Thesis Writing Help 1 1 Grammar, idea organization
2 1 1 Needed help on a course assignment. 2 2 Resume building, help with thesis work. I know the writing center provides these, I just have never sought them out.
2 2 I think they are a great resource for students who need help developing their writing skills! 1 I am not certain I can insightfully answer this question as I have never used a writing center so I don't know all the services they currently offer.
1 2 They seem useful for some people, and not as useful for others. 2 Editing, another set of eyes on a paper
1 2 I am a math student so they are not particularly relevant to my work. 3 None
1 1 2 Study space intended/designed to stay focused on writing. The option for help if needed 2 Gramerical/citation help. Moniterizarion/accountability
1 1 1 Accountability, writing help (structure, etc.), ability to talk through the process with someone. 1 1 I personally don’t need more than what is already available.
2 2 I think that they can be helpful, particularly for students who struggle with writing or who need someone to bounce ideas off of. 2 I haven't ever used the writing center, but if I were to go it would likely be for something specific -- for instance if I needed help writing in a genre I was unfamiliar with.
2 1 2 1 Drop in support
2 1 1 Looking for research articles 2 3 I'm not sure.
1 2 Valuable 1 Editing of drafts at no charge
2 1 1 For help editing thesis and citation clarification. 1 1 The services they are providing now
2 2 Having worked in a writing center before, I think they are really important centers for peer-driven writing instruction. 2 Sounding board for ideas, mostly. Someone intelligent to brainstorm with.
2 2 Probably where I would go if I ever had to write a paper. 2 Help with grammar, formatting, and appropriate language.
1 2 1 Help refining a thesis, guidance finding research resources, help with appropriate formatting.
2 1 1 For helpful input on an Participatory Action research proposal and then document I put together for two research courses in the AHE program. 2 2 Formative assessment of research methodology and processes, advice on citation and works cited viability, assistance with navigating EBSCO and other research portals offered through WWU, feedback on transitions and credibility in writhing based on style of research and other supporting documentation
