Self-Assessment: Strain

Strains represent the ultimate consequence of the stress process. Strains come in many forms and are often categorized as physical, psychological, or behavioral. Physical strains include issues such as high blood pressure, back pain, and stomachaches, which occur in your body. Psychological strains include responses such as depression, anxiety, and the inability to think clearly. Finally, behavioral strains include unhealthy behaviors such as grinding your teeth or compulsive overeating.

This assessment measures the general amount of psychological strain that you feel after a full day of classes.

Read each of the following statements, and indicate the response that you believe best reflects your position regarding that statement. Note that there are no right or wrong selections.

Score : 19 pts. 0-25

Feedback : Low Strain: If your score is below 25, you tend to feel a below average amount of psychological strain at the end of a full day of classes.

This may be due to several factors. You may simply not be experiencing many stressors in your classes right now. Alternatively, you may have learned over the years how best to manage stressful experiences so that you level of strain is minimized. Perhaps you manage the stressful experiences themselves—managing your time efficiently or taking a well-balanced schedule of courses —or you may manage your strain with efforts such as relaxation techniques or a health and wellness program.

Total Score: 0 pts.

FEEDBACK:

High Strain: If your score is above 26, you tend to feel an above average amount of psychological strain at the end of a full day of classes.

There are several steps you can take to try to minimize the level of psychological strain you feel. You could try to eliminate stressful demands that you experience from class— perhaps managing time on projects more efficiently or taking the right course load each semester to spread out the more stressful courses. You could also work on minimizing strains directly—perhaps try new relaxation techniques, follow a health and wellness program, or try a new cognitive coping technique.
