PHOTO ESSAY

In this essay you, will write about an image. The image will serve as an entry point to developing an argument (not strictly an opinion) about the image or what it represents.  First, you must choose an image that strikes you. If you are going to choose a portrait, it is best to choose an image of someone outside of your personal network. Once you have chosen the image, you will research it: When was it taken? Who took it? What do you know about the photographer? Where was it published? What is the historical context surrounding it? And so on. You will then write a paragraph or two describing the photo in detail. Afterwards, you will generate several claims about the photo (To help with creating these claims you should ask yourself these questions: What is significant metaphorically and/or symbolically about this photo? What is the message being communicated? For whom is this image intended? Whom does it exclude?). Remember that, among other attributes, a strong claim justifies reasonable opposition, takes a stance, and omits absolute language. You will not address all of you claims in the essay; their purpose is to help generate a central argument. Once you have a draft of that central argument, look for evidence to support it in the readings we’ve been assigned this semester. (You won’t need to consult sources outside our class texts). This essay will utilize deductive structure, meaning you will move from a general argument (thesis) to specific evidence. It should be drafted with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The image should be included with the essay. It should follow MLA standards. The length of the paper is 4-6 pages.
