With advancements in technology, healthcare systems have taken initiatives to equip their facilities with newly developed software, programs, and even applications to meet client’s preferences. The whole exercise of rolling out the SDLC program requires a well-established system that will aid in problem–solving through a systematic approach that will provide either suggestions or solutions to any existing or underlying challenge. McGonigle & mastrian highlighted that informaticist nurses should address the constraints affecting documentation processes in the nursing field. The inclusion of a nurse leader in the implementation team will assist with active contributions on what to be include or omitted in the SDLC program with reference to any existed system for a sound outcome to be realized.
SDLC major steps/ phase (Systems Development Life Cycle)
SDLC steps vary with the system or program in question. Perhaps for the nursing documentation system, five main steps are normally considered. The steps include; system requirements definition and planning. Analysis of the system, designing the system, system implementation, system testing, and maintenance. Worth noting is that every step must include nurses whose role is to facilitate and increase the chances of successful outcomes since they are experienced and well informed on the required output (Mougoue, 2017). Nurse leaders will help system developers and ensure that the developed plan has taken care of the organization’s needs. As a nurse informaticist, I will identify and communicate any issues detected in the system concerning the workflow if the developers chose the reverse system development approach.
Planning and defining all the system requirements.
Planning serves as a better platform for assembling all that is required for the project to be successful. In the system development cycle, I will provide the developers with a healthcare plan to use the information presented in the plan to layout appropriate approaches for system development. In consultation with the leader nurse, I will identify specific inputs from the system requirement definition manual to ensure that the system developer incorporates all required by the organization into the SDLC program (Half, 19). Then the system developers will decide the best way to code all specified inputs.
Program analysis
In this stage will establish all processes related to SDLC program together with its workflows. After doing that, I will also make a determination as to whether the system has incorporated all system requirement inputs specified in the earlier phases or not. I will also evaluate all the processes to find out if they conform to the institution’s taste, and if not, I will therefore recommend appropriate changes to be made before proceeding to the next level (Morgue, 2017). It is good to know that at this stage, the presence of other nurses will help explain the efficiency of the current system with reference to the one they had previously so that proper judgment and adjustment can be made. I will discuss with system developers on how to ensure that all systems requirements have been met as stated.
Designing phase
At this stage, I will be able to establish general workability and physical, technical outlook of the system. I will recommend to the SDLC developers on the type of data that should be included in the SDLC program. I will also consult the nursing team for any decision or recommendations before the developers configure the system's design. After that will request the developers to generate some porotypes and screen shorts together with mockups so that I confirm whether there exist any glitches or potential weaknesses. Additionally, I will also scrutinize all the flowcharts generated to confirm they follow all the appropriate path and display expected inputs (Half, 19).
System implementation phase
Post-implementation support.
At this stage, I will take charge of testing the system. A will confirm where the system can produce required outputs and that all issues highlighted previously have been solved. It will be my duty to ascertain whether all outputs produced are in line with system requirements (Hugo, 2019). I will also oversee the whole process of integrating the SDLC program into our organization and take charge of notifying the developers on issues to do with system maintenance and recommending any useful changes
Conclusion
IT is an integral part of the healthcare system. It must be embraced and applied in all fields of nursing. Implementation of the SDLC program has reduced and enhanced our documentation system as nurses will now be out of tiresome manual paperwork. In system development, I strongly advise the nurse inclusion to participate in addressing issues of concern.
