SCI 100 Question Development Worksheet
Answer the following questions. Your instructor will use these answers to evaluate the critical elements for Project 2.
1. Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally and scientifically?
I selected the topic due to several reasons. First, personally, I love science and nature. No world can exist without nature, for this reason, I chose the topic to understand more about forests and the risks facing the old-growth forests. Scientifically, I can say that the topic fascinated me as it is connected to nature in the sense that the destruction of these forests means that human life will also be at risk. In other words, the connection between adversely affected nature and human life influenced me to pick the topic.
2. What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or assumptions had you made about it?
One thing I knew about the topic is that there is increased risk to forests across the world as experienced in Australia, South America, and currently, in the United States. When I read the topic’s title, I assumed that humans are destroying the forests via deforestation.
3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How?
The interconnection between nature and human life is the course subject I can relate to the story of the old-growth forest. Destruction of nature, such as forests, adversely affects human life in several areas.
4. What question do you have about the topic in the news story? Select one question that interests you based on your topic exploration graphic organizer and previous responses.
How and when do we know that the forests are at risk, so we act accordingly?
5. Why would this question be important to a natural scientist?
The question is of significance to a natural scientist because it is not clearly defined when a forest is under threat of destruction. Is the forest under threat due to cutting down a few trees, or in the forest a risk from cutting several trees? Without a clear definition of forests being at risk, we may not understand when and when not to act to save the forests.
