Resource Assignment
School Resources Assignment
Resources incorporate both broad and narrow definitions. Puleo and Mclothlin (2014) mentioned resources as intrinsic, available at varying levels, both palpable and intangible, and can be provided to meet the needs of individuals. Additionally, these authors believe that “[c]ommunity resources include external supports, such as social networks, on which the individual or family can draw” (Puleo and Mclothlin, 2014, p. 9). Therefore, it is imperative that school counselors be knowledgeable of community resources in mental health and any other living needs persons may possess. As a result, referring families for specific types of services is a unified effort by school leaders in coordinated health.
One misunderstanding in the use of resources is that they are optional. The scope of a school counselor’s practice does not allow services to be provided that extend beyond their professional competence, making resources necessary. Another misunderstanding is that a resource is just a website provided to the students and families to seek more information about. Resources should be complete, provided to meet the specific needs of your students and their families, should have hyperlinks if given electronically, and targeted for students and parents alike.
