The Graduate: “The Sound of Silence” & “April Come She Will” montage
Analyze the “The Sound of Silence” and “April Come She Will” montage sequence in The
Graduate, identifying how the editing develops the film’s narrative and thematic (i.e., implicit)
meanings.
The sequence is available on Blackboard under the “Clips” tab.
Structure:
Do not write this with a conventional introduction and conclusion, simply a body of analysis.
Style:
Book and film titles are italicized. Song titles are in quotation marks.
Do not use contractions.
Do not use first-person.
Write in a formal voice, avoiding jargon and slang. Don’t insert a personal opinion about the
film; this isn’t a film review, it’s an analysis. Follow the general model of the book in terms of
tone and style.
Narrative events should be described using present tense (“Ben floats in the pool.”)
Length: 750-1,000 words
Papers are due by 5:00 PM, Tuesday October 2nd. They are to be submitted electronically via
SafeAssignment on the course Blackboard site as Microsoft Word documents. They are to be
double spaced and in 12 point Times New Roman font. Title your Word Document file with your
last name and paper number (e.g., “Tarantino Paper 3”).
