Overview

Lean methodology is the foundation of many enhanced methods for addressing the issues of waste management and productivity. Value stream mapping has been an excellent addition to the lean methodology concept in which the processes and subtasks are mapped to meet the required criteria. This project is addressing the problem of reduced productivity of The New York City Transit for signal switch projects.

The problem of the inspectors and subcontractors visiting the manufacturing plants is stretching the timelines which can be addressed using a digital platform. Supply chain management and waste management have been addressed using proven solutions from the literature. A comprehensive approach has been proposed in which the issues that take time and reduce productivity have been addressed.

Research topic/problem identified

The New York City transit has a problem that needs to be addressed.

A signal upgrade project at New York city transit involves upgrading the track switch with a new version.

The contract details and specifications including the material list are sent to the inspectors so that they can manufacture based on the specifications

The vendors customize and make their products as per the specifications and Standards. The contractor then contacts the professionals and inspector from the New York city transit with all the testing requirements to visit the location of the vendor and inspect the material before delivery. There are numerous specifications both technical and non-technical that need to be satisfied before the inspection is complete and approved by the team from New York City transit.

The material is then shipped to the storage area for installation and the project continues.

Research topic/problem identified

The problem in this step is that there are no specific timelines or schedules for the drawings to be submitted and it is a common pattern to find submissions from the contractors till the last minute. It is also observed that the specification approval takes a minimum of three weeks with no specifications on the timeline.

Solutions Recommended

Lean methodology has different dimensions and there are many variations used for different applications. The proposed solution in this research project is connected to applying the lean methodology for different stages of the project.

Timelines - The first step in the proposed solution is the accurate design of the timelines and schedule for every step of the process.

Waste management - Waste management requires the elimination of different processes that consume both time and money. The transportation of the waste material between different teams of the project should be minimized by reducing the distance between these entities.

Solutions Recommended

Supply chain management - The supply of raw materials and the visits of the Inspector to the vendor location are consuming time. This method needs to be enhanced by using a new value stream mapping.

Benefits for your Project Management Plan

Mapping of various subtasks and schedules is the highlight of the proposed solution.

A timeline in the form of a Gantt chart is prepared and all the stakeholders have explained the new enhanced method to which they should adhere.

This method not only improves productivity but also provides higher accuracy of the results.

Insights/Conclusions

This research study is related to minimizing the time taken for waste management and improving the efficiency of a construction project.

Various research studies were reviewed and analyzed to understand the state-of-the-art research going on in the field to compare it with the existing standards.

A detailed literature review has been presented to compare ongoing research and analyze the limitations.

Summary

A comprehensive approach of value stream mapping in which the different stages of the project implementation are explained.

This solution ensures the productivity is enhanced. This method can be used by the NYCT company for future projects. The evaluation of the proposed methodology has been based on the theoretical approach and the literature studies have been used as the support for the proposal.
