GOAL: PARTNER WITH A PROFESSIONAL MENTOR Specific – I have just completed my MBA and started a job with a new company. The company is in a familiar industry that I have 4 years of experience in, but I am not versed on the organization’s products or market segment. I would like to partner with an industry expert who can help guide my learning and application of my newly learned MBA skills.
Measurable – By the time of my first employee review I would like to be proficient in all areas of my job. I should be able to make sales calls on my own, have the required product knowledge to make sales presentations appropriately, and have learned all computer systems and internal structure.
Achievable – Improving my professional skills is paramount to advancing my career and receiving high marks on my first employee review. I can set aside time ever week for phone calls, skype calls, and work-days each week. I will additionally seek help from my direct supervisor and coworkers.
Relevant – As a sales professional I interact with customers and prospective customers on a daily basis. I must be proficient in the workings of the market segment and knowledgeable about my organizations products to make efficient sales calls.
Time-Bound – Within the next ten months I should be extremely proficient in my job role and working in the field on my own before my first employee review.
GOAL: COMPLETE A PROJECT MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION Specific – To further my career and knowledge I plan on returning to school to take an online project management certification course to add to my current MBA. In many instances I am asked to work on very large projects at work. Having this knowledge will enhance my current skills, make me more efficient, and bring more value to my customers.
Measurable – Within the next six months I would like to be enrolled in an online project management certification course.
Achievable – Improving my skills through an online project management certification course will further enhance my career. Once enrolled in the course I will set aside two hours a day to study as I did with my MBA studies.
Relevant – Working on large projects in my current job position amounts to about half of my current work day. I would like to further my skills to become more efficient and cut the fifty percent in half. Additionally, by enhancing my skills I will be a stronger consultant to my customers as well as being a more valuable employee to my organization.
Time-Bound – Within the next six months I plan to be enrolled in an online project management course. I will spend two hours a day studying the new material. The time frame to complete the course will be one year.
GOAL: BECOME A MENTOR Specific – After my one year of mentoring is complete, I would like to return the favor and become a mentor myself. I would like to be paired with an employee who is new to our organization and who is not experienced in our industry. I would like to coach someone in sales processes and share my 20 years of sales experience, as well as share the knowledge that my mentor shared with me.
Measurable – By the time I complete my one year employee review I would like to be paired with a new employee to start the coaching and mentoring process. The mentoring program will last one year.
Achievable – Mentoring a new employee will help enhance my managerial and coaching skills. My goal will be to set aside two hours a week for phone calls and skype calls. Additionally, I will set aside one day a month to go out in the field for a full work day in the new employee’s own territory.
Relevant – Working with and mentoring a new employee will help develop my own management skills and further my career path. I want to advance my career and work hard to eventually obtain a management position. I want to show the organization that I am a team player and willing to coach and develop new talent to meet organizational goals
Time-Bound – Within one month after my own mentoring program has been completed I would like to be assigned a new employee to mentor myself. The mentoring program will last one year.
