Why Tipping Should Be Mandatory

Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade the audience to see why tipping is extremely important.

Central Idea: Why should you always tip?

Organizational Pattern: Topical

Introduction

I. Attention Getter Did you know that waiters and waitresses only make $2.13 an hour? That’s before taxes and after they declare their tips every day, they most likely receive a $0.00 paycheck every week or two weeks.

II. Credibility Statement I have been a waitress for the past 6 years and if people did not tip then I would not make any kind of salary.

III. Reveal the Topic or State the Thesis or provide Significance Statement Waiters are on their feet for at least 7 hours a day and sometimes do not have the chance to eat, why wouldn’t you tip them for literally slaving away for you?

IV. Preview Statement In other countries tipping is known as a disgrace or insult, but in America it is how someone can provide a roof over their head and food in their stomach. Do you think being able to support yourself and your family should be mandatory? Today, I will discuss should be a requirement when dining out as a result of current fee structure in restaurants, American tradition, and work ethic of most servers.

Transition: (Most people believe that tipping should only depend on how excellent the service is- not tipping should not be tolerated)

Body

I. Main Point While people usually do not tend to think about what waiters make an hour, they just care about whether their food comes out in a timely and orderly matter, they do not understand how minimal waiters get paid.

A. Supporting Material (Sub-point) In 1991, minimum wage was $4.25 and workers who make over $30 in tips per month only make $2.13 an hour.

1. Sub-subpoint (details) Although the minimum wage was changed from $4.25 an hour in 2013, the minimum wage for workers who are tipped still receive the same $2.13 an hour (kcet.org).

2. Sub-subpoint Because waiters only receive the minimum pay of $2.13 an hour, they receive little to no paycheck because you also must think about the taxes that come out of your check at the end of the week.

B. Supporting Material (Sub-point) “The Minimum Wage Fairness Act”, which Obama endorsed, would have gradually raised tipped workers’ minimum wage to 70 percent of the regular minimum wage” (Mother Jones).

1. Sub-subpoint (Details) “The Minimum Wage Fairness Act” had faced some hardship from the Republicans and the restaurant lobby so sadly the 70 percent raise of the tipped’ workers minimum wage did not change and is still at $2.13 an hour.

2. Sub-subpoint People should take in to consideration that waiters only make $2.13 an hour and if said people do not tip, their lives can be affected tremendously.

(There are a few factors that most people do not realize go into tipping a waiter.)

II. Main Point In some countries it can be considered rude to tip. In America it is a vital necessity for waiters’ life; there are also some weird factors that come into how a waiter can receive more tips.

A. Supporting Material (Sub-point) In Japan tipping is considered uncommon and even rude. “If you must tip someone in Japan, it is acceptable to give the tip in a white envelope – don’t just slip cash to the person” (U.S. News).

1. Sub-subpoint (Details) In most restaurants in America most of the tips that waiters receive do not 100 percent go straight into their pocket, they also must tip out bus help, hosts’, and bartenders.

2. Sub-subpoint There are a few random facts that raise the waiter’s tips such as wearing red lip stick, looking clean, giving excellent service, touching the customer on the shoulder, squatting so you’re at eye level with the customer and giving candy to the customer after their meal (U.S News).

B. Supporting Material (Sub-point) Tipping wasn’t common in the United Stated until after the Civil War, it all began when the wealthy Americans travels to Europe and would tip to make them look worldly (U.S News).

1. Sub-subpoint (Details) The word “tip” means “To Insure Promptitude”; this was once printed on bowls in British coffeehouses (Business Insider).

2. Sub-subpoint “Anti-tipping laws ensued, starting in 1909 when Washington became the first of six states to pass the new law, but failed to make a significant splash. By 1926, every anti-tipping law was repealed” (Business Insider).

(Transition Statement)

III. Main Point Waiters are on their feet for at least 7 hours a day slaving away for customers without a break.

A. Supporting Material (Sub-point) There are always multiple things that happen to a waiter everyday on their shift that make them that much closer to having a mental breakdown.

1. Sub-subpoint (Details) Running children, parents who don’t care about their screaming baby, customers staring at you with their hungry eyes, sore feet, hands that will smell like onions forever, and many more examples just like the ones listed above are why waiters should always have gratitude shown to them (Shoes For Crews).

2. Sub-subpoint There is nothing worse than not just having one boss but having literally hundreds a day; your customers.

B. Supporting Material (Sub-point) Of course waiting tables can be difficult if you’re new or “in the weeds” (very busy and drowning fast), but there are a few things that waiters can do to try and make waiting tables a little stress free.

1. Sub-subpoint (Details) In order to have a stress-free shift as waiter you can do a few things such as greet the table within two minutes of them sitting down at their table, check back within a minute or two of giving them their food, offer the best food/drinks, thank them when handing out checks and thank them again for coming (Tough Nickel).

2. Sub-subpoint Because restaurants can be extremely busy and if the waiter has a section with lots of tables it is going to be hard to do all the things listed above but if the waiter can check some of those things off of the check list then I am sure the tip will be just fine at the end of the customers breakfast/lunch/dinner.

(Do you tip when you go out to eat?)

Conclusion

I. Signpost, One Sentence Summary. In conclusion, tipping should be mandatory not only because of the many factors that come into play when it comes to tipping a waiter but simply because they have served you while you got the chance to relax and not work for your delicious meal.

II. Final Clincher/Impact Statement Put yourself in a waiter’s shoes, would you want to live on the streets because simply no one tipped you after their meal? Or would you rather live in the comfort of your home and with your family because all your amazing customers tipped you for your excellent service?
