Week 7 Assignment The purpose of this paper is to analyze my results from the FHEA exam and develop a

plan of action based on my weaknesses and areas I need to work on. A study plan will be created

to help me maintain my areas of strength and address the area that I need to spend more time

improving on. This will help me to pass the National Board Certification Exam. The 3 areas of

focus will be the Foundations of Advanced Practice Nurse, Independent Practice Competencies,

and Professional Role and Policy. The transition from RN to NP can be stressful with the

increased liability and expectations (Barnes, 2015).

Foundations of Advanced Practice Nurse

After reviewing my exam, an area I would like to improve on for the foundations of the

Advanced Practice Nurse would be CPT codes and reimbursement from insurance companies. I

would like to have a better understanding of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System,

reimbursement systems, and how to contract with insurance companies for services. My plan to

improve in this area is to research and read about the information along with do practice

questions in board vitals. Another area I would like to feel more comfortable in would be dose

ranges for medications. I plan to do this by referring to Stephen Stahl’s The Prescriber’s Guide

and by doing board vitals practice questions specific to medications.

Independent Practice Competencies

As far as for independent practice competencies, an area I would like to improve on

would be strange side effects from medications. Some medications have unique side effects, ones

that differentiate them from other medications or certain symptoms that need to be monitored

which I feel is something I need to improve on. I also would like to feel more confident about

prescribing psychiatric medications with coexisting medical conditions and what to watch out for

and be aware of when dealing with a patient who has medical issues. I overall feel like I have a

good grasp on psychiatric medications, their drug class, and their uses. I will continue to practice

reviewing psychiatric medications by taking practice exams and using my study resources.

Advanced Practice Nurses are certified to apply their expanded skills to improve patient

outcomes (Heinen, 2019).

Profession Role and Policy

An area of the FHEA exam under professional role and policy that I need to improve on

is related to terms used in different studies including case-controlled studies and randomized

studies to collect evidence. This is not something that is taught thoroughly in any course

throughout the program which is why review is needed. Another area to review is nursing

theories and different established acts. Reviewing this material along with doing practice

questions will help to gain strength in these areas. An example of acts that need review is the

Affordable Care Act or ACA. The extent of the information under the ACA to expand health care

coverage incorporates various provisions including prevention and wellness, improving quality

and system performance, and decreasing costs (Joseph, 2015).

Conclusion

In conclusion, taking practice exams such as the FHEA exam can help individuals to

analyze their strengths and weaknesses. This can help to outline areas where more time and

practice is needed to be spent focusing on specific concepts and areas of knowledge. Using my

textbook resources and doing daily practice exams can help focus on my weak areas and be

prepared to pass the ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner board certification

exam.
