Redox Reactions
Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to discuss an experiment of redox reactions with the aim of determining whether some metals react faster than others through Redox process.
Materials:
Six metal strips including Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Lead, Zinc and unknown metal.
Dilute Hydrochloric Acid, Copper solution, Zinc solution and Silver Nitrate solution.
Gloves for protection and a dropper for placing the metal stripes in the solutions.
Procedure:
A cleaned portion of each metal strip is placed in different solutions at different times and held for some time for a reaction to occur. Observations are then made and recorded in the table and results page. The first solution is the copper solution where a cleaned strip of each metal is placed and observations made after a reaction occurs. This process is repeated for each metal in a zinc solution and the observation for each is recorded. In each of the metal strips a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid is added to each metal strip then reaction is observed and recorded after a few seconds. This process is repeated for each strip using a drop of silver nitrate solution and careful observation for each reaction is observed.

Results and Discussion:
There were no unusual events that would have introduced errors to the experiment. Each metal strip was placed in the different solutions as required and observations made for each reaction. The magnesium strip showed faster reaction when introduced to each of the solutions. It also displayed different reactions depending on the solution it is placed in. When copper metal strip was placed in all the four solutions, there was no reaction in the first 30 seconds. Iron strip had a reaction in the first 30 secs when placed in the zinc solution. Lead metal strip had no reaction when placed in the copper solution but reacted faster when drops of hydrochloric acid and silver nitrate were added to the metal strip where it turned black. Zinc turned black immediately when placed in copper solution and when drops of silver nitrate were added, indicating a faster redox reaction. The unknown metal exhibited similar reactions to the zinc metal indicating that it was a zinc metal strip.
Conclusion:
This experiment succeeded in showing that some metals react faster than others when exposed to different solutions.
