Reflection on Standard 7: Ethics

In responding to the application of nursing standard, I have visited an acute care department at King Saud Medical City (KSMC) last week. The purpose of my visit was to demonstrate whether the Renal Dialysis Unit (RDU) has specific guidelines of applying the nursing ethics.

The policy of the hospital has addressed the obligations of the nurses in terms of providing effective patient care to all health care consumers without any biases. This may indicate that the departments within the KSMC follow the ANA guidelines. Based on my observation last week, I found that nurse leaders are strongly recommending other nurses to care for patients without any discriminations based on patients’ age, gender, nationality, or any other individual characteristics. However, these recommendations are usually discussed verbally in the department. In my point of view, I would suggest documenting these guidelines within each department. Thus, all other nurses would have the chance to read and apply these guidelines.

Finally, the nursing department at KSMC does not provide clear ethical guidelines to the nurses working in the acute care department. The nurses working in the RDU may not have the essential knowledge and skills regarding the code of ethics. I think that code of ethics must be clearly addressed within each department of the hospital. It is not acceptable to hold these ethical guidelines in the nursing administration department without sharing them with the nurses.

It is absolutely fine if you come up with different methods to explain your opinion regarding each competency.
