Lesson Plan 1 - KReusser

Title: Travel Content: Reading Time: Grade: (5)

TEKS: ELAR 110.16 (b) (10) Reading/Comprehension of Informational Text/Culture and History. Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about the author's purpose in cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Objective(s): Learn different modes of travel using a K-W-L chart. Use modeling along with learning strategies such as listening, speaking and writing to capture the required learning concepts. Students will all use prior knowledge to build on new knowledge.

ELPS TEKS: 74.4 (c) (1) (1) Cross-curricular second language acquisition/learning strategies. The ELL uses language learning strategies to develop an awareness of his or her own learning processes in all content areas. In order for the ELL to meet grade-level learning expectations across the foundation and enrichment curriculum, all instruction delivered in English must be linguistically accommodated (communicated, sequenced, and scaffolded) commensurate with the student's level of English language proficiency. The student is expected to:

ELPS: ELL will use techniques to meet the objective above through using prior knowledge, verbal/nonverbal, and written skills as well as learn new vocabulary, have classroom interaction, cooperative group participation, use visual and contextual aids to read and present text, write newly acquired vocabulary, and spell familiar English text.

Hook/Setting the Stage: 5 minutes

· Teacher distributes a word search (without a title), students are to find as many words as they can, then guess what the words have in common.

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. ELL may use a bilingual dictionary to aid with translation or clarification of words the ELL does not understand.

2. Partner ELL will a native speaker to allow communication, contribution and understanding.

Activity: Introduce the topic of Travel K-W-L chart. Teacher asks the students what they know about Travel, and records responses on LARGE K-W-L chart on chart paper or black broad

· Teacher reads the story about modes of travel around the world.

· In partners, students are to summarize the main ideas using “Get the Gist” strategy. Teacher first models this summarization strategy by summarizing the first paragraph in 10 words or less. This will be the topic sentence. Students are to summarize the rest of the story with their partner and record on their shamrock, remind them to include the topic sentence that the teacher did as part of their complete summary

· ESL methods and strategies :

1. Along with the Large K-W-L chart the teacher will provide additional visual aids of different types modes of travel around the world and read the story in a slow clear voice while using repeating parts of the model in simplified terms.

2. The ELL student be partnered with a native speaker and, if available, a bilingual student. The ELL and group will sit in the front of the class near the teacher and take turns with their written and oral summaries.

Extension: When students are finished

· Develop a new word search using words from the story on modes of travel

· Word search sheet provided

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. Use a Think-Pair-Share approach. Have the ELL use the visual aids briefing work independently and pair up with another similar ELL to share and complete the word search. Bilingual dictionary is acceptable.

2. Have ELL students build a card file of vocabulary words learned in the exercise and give them extra credit for it. The ELL will be allowed and extra 5 minutes to complete.

Closure:

· Students swap their word search with other partners

Assessment:

· Teacher assesses the content of the summary to make sure that all pertinent information is included

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. Allow the ELL to submit the KWL chart with pictures with up to 33% of the writing in the ELL’s native language

2. Have the ELL students describe and summarizing their K-W-L Chart and add it to the ELLs journal for referral.

4. Using the Travel Lesson Plan Sample (provided), modify the lesson plan for use with ESL/LOTE students by selecting the modification you plan to use.   Modifications can be found in the lesson plan study guide or a quick Internet search. You will need to go to the Texas Education Agency website to find the appropriate TEKS and ELPS for the grade level you choose. The TEKS and ELPS can be found under the Curriculum tab on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills page.
