Lesson Plan 1

Title: fractions, percents and decimals Content :: Math Time: 50 minutes Grade: 6

Objective(s): SWBAT make connections about the relationship between fractions, percents, and decimals. Students will apply their knowledge of fractions, percents, and decimals to solve real-world problems..

TEKS: 6.5 Proportionality. The student applies mathematical process standards to solve problems involving proportional relationships. The student is expected to:

(C) use equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents to show equal parts of the same whole.

ELPS:

Listening

i. (c)(2)(D): monitor understanding of spoken language during classroom instruction and interactions and seek clarification as needed.

ii. (c)(2)(I): demonstrate listening comprehension responding to questions and requests, collaborating with peers.

Speaking

i.(c)(3)(B):use new vocabulary in oral communication.

ii.(c)(3)(D): speak using grade level content area vocabulary in context to internalize new English words and build academic language proficiency.

iii. (c)(3)(E): share information in cooperative learning interactions.

iv. (c)(3)(G): orally express opinions, ideas, and feelings.

Reading

i.(c)(4)(G): Show comprehension of English individually and in groups.

i.(c)(4)(K): Show comprehension through analytical skills.

Writing

i.(c)(5)(B):write using newly acquired vocabulary.

ii.(c) (5) (G): Narrate, describe, and explain in writing.

Hook/Setting the Stage: 5 minutes

· Have students first watch a funny video clip on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUBIPl73doc) which involves fractions, percents, and decimals.

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. Place students in mixed level groups.

2. Use technology (iPads) to aid with translation or clarification

Activity: 25 minutesAfter watching, ask students questions like what is a percentage? What is a fraction? What is an equivalent fraction? How do percentages relate to fractions and decimals? Let students give some examples of fractions, percents, and decimals if possible, and records responses on smart broad.

· Teacher gives comments on the video just watched, and emphasizes key vocabularies by speaking and writing.

· In groups, giving focus questions, students are to summarize the main ideas using Venn diagram. Teacher first models Venn diagram by summarizing fractions (definition, characters, some examples). Students are to summarize the rest of the equivalent fractions, percents, decimals, and relations among them with their partners and record on group paper.

· Teacher walks through each group to monitor students performance and provide supports or guides when necessary. Teacher encourages students to communicate with peers.

· ESL methods and strategies :

1. Use manipulatives (they are best to help ELLs )

2. Use iPads to replay the video clip

Extension: 10 minutes When students are finished group activities.

· Provide students worksheet to have them do practice individually, require students identify and write new acquired vocabulary on their worksheet.

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. Use pictures and visual aids (provided on the individual worksheet)

2. Extend time for assignments to be completed

Closure: 10 minutes

· Have each group present their group work paper to class and each group member explain his/her work with simply words. Teacher encourages students speak aloud on their presentation. Have groups comment each other for the group presentation by speaking.

Assessment:

· During class teacher monitors students response and performance both in group activity and individual practice. Teacher collects students work and assesses the content of the summary to make sure that all pertinent information is included.

· ESL methods and strategies:

1. Simplify written tests, give oral tests (group work paper, class presentation)

2. Review (oral, pictorial or written) as often as possible ( use smart board to provide support or guide to whole class)
