Discussion of GENDER AND DIVERSITY IN MEDIA

Sample 1:

Bryan Stevenson talked about his experience and thoughts of the United States criminal justice system as well as his disagreement towards the death penalty. He implied that people do not have the rights to conduct a death penalty to others. He then talked about the importance of having a basic human identity and urged individuals to care about their own identity. As Stevenson said, “we can not be fully evolved human beings until we care about justice for all and are truly willing to confront our difficult past”. He illustrated the significance for everyone to care about the justice.  I think it is considerable to tell one’s own story because it is real and can be related to everyone, in some cases. Telling one’s own experience made the story and the speech more appealing and practical than saying broader ideas or theories that some might find it confused.

Sample 2:

It is important to be authentic about your story because it creates transparency that people can relate to. Everyone has been through struggles and hearing about other people's helps build empathy that you are not the only one going through something. If you think you are alone, but hear about someone else having experienced something similar, a bond is created based on respect. Advice can also be shared between the people that have similar stories. Hearing stories of something completely beyond your imagination of what someone can struggle with builds compassion. People are very quick to judge exteriors of others so sharing deeper into identities can negate the immediate judgement. 

Sample 3:

It's important to tell your story because you're the only one that can tell it from your experiences, and if you want to really make a difference sometimes it takes as many stories as possible, including your own, to generate noise. Only you know what you're going through. By sharing your story, others have the chance to hear someone else's, they can hear how different your life might be from theirs and realize through that how each person lives a different way. Telling your story brings it to life just as books and movies do their own words, now able to express emotion and allow for any viewer or reader to understand that this could be them sometime, they can relate, and build emotional ties.

Sample 4:

By telling one's own story, people would get moved by the authentic story. When more stories are been told, there would be less "single stories". With less single stories, different ethnicity can be understood in more dimensional aspects. Also, by telling one's own story, people would realize that there aren't so many differences between people. 

Sample 5:

I think "own authentic story" is the experience, which may be more valuable than theories, principles and ideas; because own stories can arouse audiences' feelings easier and can be more visualize. For example, if I explain to a person about how I feel when I am eating an ice cream, how the ice cream look like, and why ice cream tastes good is a better way than just tell a person the ice cream is cold and sweet. Similarly, when Bryan Stevenson and Ngozi Adichi tells people their own stories from young ages or as African American, the more feelings and details they say, the more easier to build compassion or empathy for others. For instance, Bryan Stevenson tell people stories to state why the contrast to poverty is not wealth but justice is more important than tell people some cases that he met. In addition, it is because own stories are authentic, it is more persuasive for people to know something they cannot see or experience.
