Introduction

A. Did you know that Chinese culture is famous for preserving its traditional ways and culture? (Pauses and looks at the crowd)

B. As a history enthusiast, I can affirm that the Chinese have preserved their language, clothing, artifact, philosophy, architecture, social structures, and literature despite them being heavily industrialized (Kaplan Professional, n.d.).

C. Various cultural values exist in Chinese culture.

D. Today, I will discuss the cultural high-low power distance; masculinity and femininity; and uncertainty avoidance cultural values in the Chinese culture (Makes eye contact with the crowd).

Body

A. The Chinese culture has a high-power distance cultural value as its people have accepted the power inequalities that exist among them.

I. High power distance in cultures refers to the existence of high levels of inequality in power and this is accepted by everyone.

II. Low power distance, on the other hand, means that low levels of inequality exist and the people are not willing to agree to unequal distribution of power.

III. As described by Pennsylvania State University (2020), the Chinese’s score in the power distance scale is at 80.

1. This means that most people accept and do not question the decisions of their seniors (implements tonal variation).

2. Usually, those in government positions hold higher power than other common people and they demand respect. Often, the decisions of these high-power individuals are taken as final and are not challenged by those under them.

IV. Those in power also enjoy better living conditions and are always given priority and good treatments during gatherings.

B. The Chinese culture upholds masculinity as its cultural value.

I. This is because the men are often expected to work and provide for the family while the women are expected to stay at home and take care of the family by performing various household chores (Erikson & Jahan, 2010).

II. Masculinity in cultural values refers to a culture that emphasizes the differences between the expectations required of men and women. It holds that men and women can never be the same.

1. Here, the men are required to be assertive and work towards material success while women need to be nurturing and focus on improving the quality of life.

III. On the other hand, femininity in cultural values holds that people should be focused and nurturing regardless of their gender (Sarhan et al., 2015).

IV. Masculinity is still being practiced in China despite having developmental changes that have allowed women to work (maks eye contact with the audience).

2. For instance, a man in the same position as a woman earns more than the female. Some job opportunities are also provided to men given their complex nature.

C. The Chinese culture has a low uncertainty avoidance

I. Uncertainty avoidance refers to how cultures view their future and react to them.

1. Some cultures believe that the future cannot be controlled and thus, they accept the ambiguousness of things allowing events to unfold the way they want. Such cultures have a high rate of uncertainty avoidance.

2. Those with a low rate are open to change and new ideas, therefore, allowing them to work hard to achieve a good future.

II. The Chinese people are entrepreneurial, something that allows them to plan and predict their future (Hofstede Insights, 2020).

III. With the current technology, the Chinese have been allowed to conduct innovations in all sectors of the economy and this has greatly promoted the growth of their economy.

Conclusion

A. The Chinese have a high-power distance, masculinity, and low uncertainty avoidance.

B. I will end with this important quote by Ruth Benedict states that “the crucial differences which distinguish human societies and human beings are not biological. They are cultural”.

C. Thank you (Smiles at the audience then leaves).
