1 ANALYSIS OF A PERTINENT HEALTHCARE ISSUE

Daniela Duran 08/31/2022

Many Americans live longer than in the past due to medical advancements and greater healthcare awareness.

This is abundantly clear from the rise of the senior population from 12 percent in 2000 to 14.9 percent in 2016.

2 (DRENNAN & ROSS,2019). This does not indicate that Americans are living healthier lifestyles. 1

ACCORDING TO STATISTICS, EIGHT OUT OF TEN AMERICANS SUFFER FROM MULTIPLE

CHRONIC ILLNESSES, INCLUDING HYPERTENSION, ALLERGIES, AND DIABETES. THIS IS

WHY THE SHORTAGE OF NURSES IN THE UNITED STATES IS A PREVALENT ISSUE THAT

MUST BE ADDRESSED. THIS ESSAY WILL DISCUSS THE EFFECTS OF THE NURSE

SHORTAGE ON WORK ENVIRONMENTS, THE SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTED BY OTHER

ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THOSE SOLUTIONS ON

AN ORGANIZATION.

NURSING IS ONE OF THE FASTEST-GROWING OCCUPATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT

THE COUNTRY CONTINUES TO FACE A SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED NURSES DUE TO THE

INCREASED DEMAND FOR NURSING CARE. THE NURSING SHORTAGE NEGATIVELY

AFFECTS THE ORGANIZATION, NURSES, AND PATIENTS. It impacts the standard of care provided.

1 MOREOVER, IT CAUSES AN ORGANIZATION TO INCUR UNANTICIPATED EXPENSES

(DRENNAN & ROSS,2019). DESPITE BEING ONE OF THE TOP HOSPITALS IN THE UNITED

STATES FOR CARDIOLOGY, CARDIAC SURGERY, ONCOLOGY, TRANSPLANTATION, AND

NEUROSCIENCES, EMORY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL HAS BEEN NEGATIVELY AFFECTED BY

THE NURSE SHORTAGE. THE HOSPITAL HAS 587 BEDS AND TREATS MORE THAN 24,000

INPATIENTS AND 80,000 OUTPATIENTS ANNUALLY. TO SERVE THE ENTIRE HOSPITAL,

THERE ARE 375 NURSE PRACTITIONERS AND APPROXIMATELY 1,625 FACULTY

PHYSICIANS. 3 A SHORTAGE OF NURSES IS A PROBLEM. 1 TO AVOID BEING

OVERWORKED, A REGISTERED NURSE IN GEORGIA MAY BE ASSIGNED A MAXIMUM OF

FOUR PATIENTS. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT THE SITUATION AT THE EMORY HOSPITAL. As a

result of serving up to seven patients at once, nurses' performance is affected.

1 ACCORDING TO (MARC ET AL. 2019), the nursing shortage in the twenty-first century is a significant

problem. 1 INEFFECTIVE WORKFORCE PLANNING, INEFFECTIVE RECRUITMENT, AND A

DEFICIENCY OF NEW STAFF ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NURSING SHORTAGE. Inadequate

support, funds, and leaves, as well as overburdening and deteriorating working conditions, all contribute to

employee turnover. 1 THE NURSING SHORTAGE IMPACTS INCLUDE NURSE BURNOUT, LOW

OCCUPATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY, AND POOR PATIENT OUTCOMES. (Marc et al., 2019) advocate

for the implementation of nursing and health policy to improve the situation. 1 THESE POLICIES

INCLUDE ENHANCING WORKING AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS, REGULATING

SALARIES, AND PROMOTING LIFELONG LEARNING.

REGISTERED NURSES' PERCEPTIONS OF THE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO A NURSING

SHORTAGE IN VANUATU HOSPITALS WERE EXAMINED BY (TAMATA ET AL. 2021). 1

UNFAVORABLE WORKING CONDITIONS AND PERCEIVED RISKS WERE AMONG THE

FACTORS FOUND. Heavy workloads and odd hours, a lack of administrative support, stress at work, and few

opportunities for career advancement are just a few examples of difficult working conditions. 1 THE

PERCEIVED RISKS INCLUDED WORKPLACE HARASSMENT, ACCIDENTS, AND SOCIAL AND

FAMILIAL RISK. AS A RESULT, THERE WAS AN INCREASE IN NURSE TURNOVER AND JOB

DISSATISFACTION (TAMATA ET AL., 2021).

(TAMATA ET AL., 2021) ADVISE THE VANUATU GOVERNMENT TO INVEST IN MORE

PROMINENT NURSING COLLEGES TO INCREASE THE INTAKE OF NURSING STUDENTS TO

ADDRESS THE COUNTRY'S ONGOING NURSE SHORTAGE. Additionally, emphasis should be placed

on nurses having higher education levels. These remedies aim to deal with the issue on a national scale.

Hospitals typically hire nurses based on financial considerations. 1 EVEN IF MORE NURSES ARE

TRAINED, THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE HOSPITAL WILL HIRE MORE. THE

BURDEN ON THE FEW EXISTING NURSES WILL BE REDUCED IF THE ORGANIZATION IS

ENCOURAGED TO HIRE MORE NURSES, IMPROVING OUTCOMES FOR PATIENTS, NURSES,

AND THE ORGANIZATION. On the other hand, the business will have to pay more for salaries and training

initiatives.

1 TO SUPPORT NURSES, (MARC ET AL. 2019) suggest that a new policy be put in place. These include

enhancing working conditions, setting pay scales, and promoting lifelong learning. 1 THE

ORGANIZATION WOULD GAIN FROM THIS SOLUTION BECAUSE ENHANCING WORKING

AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS WOULD PROMOTE NURSE RETENTION. To lessen the

workload of the current nurses, more nurses can be hired, and burnout and nurse fatigue would be avoided. 1

A RAISE IN PAY WOULD MAKE A CAREER IN NURSING WORTHWHILE (MARC ET AL.,

2019). The wages earned should be commensurate with the services rendered, leading to higher organizational

outcomes and improved nurse performance and patient outcomes.

In conclusion, the nurse shortage is an issue that requires immediate attention. 1 INCREASED

HEALTHCARE AWARENESS HAS LED TO AN INCREASE IN HEALTHCARE DEMAND. THE

WELL-BEING OF NURSES SHOULD ALSO BE A PRIORITY (PITTMAN & SCULLY-RUSS,2016).

A person cannot provide care for another if they are not in good health. Consequently, it is necessary to

implement policies that alleviate this healthcare stressor.
