English II Rubric for Research Notes Argument Research Paper

9 May 2018

A: Students have submitted at least nine notes, using three reliable, verifiable sources. Notes

show that the student has not relied exclusively on one source. The notes document has a correct

header and and heading, and each note has a correct parenthetical (in-text) MLA citation.

Students have carefully revised and edited their work for spelling errors, and have

composed a logical summary or paraphrase. Summaries and paraphrases are not taken

from other sources, but are original compositions. Direct quotations are in quotation

marks. The students have no more than two direct quotes. A list of works cited is

attached/included at the bottom of the notes, and is not annotated. Although there are one or two

minor punctuation errors, the bibliography’s MLA 8 citations are mostly correct. Entire work is

in TNR font, size 12, double spaced. Each note is numbered, and begins with a topic heading on

the left-side margin. Each note focuses on one main idea.

B: Students have submitted nine notes, using three reliable, verifiable sources, but have

submitted notes that are do not seem to be linked to at least two topics or are too brief to provide

support for the paper. Notes are summaries or paraphrases using mostly correct MLA citations,

including header and heading. The students have no more than two direct quotes. A list of works

cited page is attached, and is not annotated. Summaries are not taken from other sources, but are

original compositions. Students have overlooked more than two mistakes-- other than minor

punctuation-- in MLA citation. Entire work is in TNR font, size 12, double spaced. Each note is

numbered, and begins with a topic heading on the left-side margin. Each note focuses on one

main idea.

C: Students have submitted less than nine notes, using three reliable, verifiable sources, and/or

the notes do not reflect quality work. The assignment itself is missing a header or heading, but

each note has a topic heading, a number designation, and a parenthetical citation. Students have

missed some significant spelling errors. Summaries are not taken from other sources, but are

original compositions. Students have overlooked more than three mistakes-- other than minor

punctuation-- in MLA citation. Entire work is in TNR font, size 12, double spaced. Each note is

numbered, and begins with a topic heading on the left-side margin. Some notes lack a clear

focus, or do not correlate to their topic headings.

D: Student notes are not original, the MLA citations have multiple errors, the student does not

use three reliable, verifiable sources, or student notes are rife with errors.

F: Students have five or fewer sources listed.
