The Magnet component that resonated with the line of work I am currently in is structural empowerment. As mentioned by the Nursing World article, "magnet serves as a way to improve nursing care by improving the nurse work condition with the benefits passing on to not only the hospital staff but the patient's well being" (ANA, 2022)
Structural empowerment is the component that brings all of the missions and values a hospital has to the forefront. These values are shown through the actions of the nurses, leadership, and management. This component is where policy and evidence-based practices take place. This component stood out because policies are essential in making things run smoothly. Policies are a way to prove evidence-based practices and ensure that staff is all on the same page. When we have a united front followed by policies, staff also feel as if there is a sense of direction, and they know where to look and where to go if there are questions. This action helps improve the nurse's confidence and impacts the quality of care. When a hospital does not run or uphold its policies, it creates confusion and poor communication among the medical staff and patients.
A personal contribution that would be made would be reading the policies and upholding them—learning where the hospital resources are, and the chain of command is also something that improves work culture and would contribute to Magnet standards. Having committees that discuss ways to improve the workplace to align with the hospital's mission statement will also guide the nurses.
Magnet not only serves to transform the organization, but it is a program that places value on nurses and genuinely cares that we have a workplace made with quality. Organizations often focus on the patient's well-being or on improving customer service. However, one thing that many organizations still need to pay attention to is that it translates into the work environment when the healthcare team is happy. Staff morale increases, patient-centered care is practiced, and medication errors decreased. Now that I know about this organization, I am curious to know how many hospitals participate and how they use the components on their units.
