I come from Birmingham, Al. I just moved to Florida, and I worked as a nurse at a very reputable magnet hospital for the fifth time in a row called, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I feel very blessed to have worked for a short period of time there. I say short because I worked as an LPN until my temporary license expired and got my RN degree. I had to quit as an LPN since my license expired and then I took my NCLEX as an RN and moved to Florida.
Anyway, I loved the fact that UAB has qualified professionals. We have had patients coming from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and other places and some were being sent by their own doctors to go to UAB in Alabama to have certain difficult surgeries done. The doctors and nurses there are highly trained and orientation for new graduates is lengthy ensuring safe patient care. As a nurse I have encountered patients that were sent from other hospitals where the surgery went wrong just to have UAB doctors "fix" them. I always said that if I ever need a big surgery I will probably go back to Alabama for the surgery. The hospital has instilled trust in me and many others. The hospital is the first hospital that can perform a venovalve procedure. Also, they have robotic surgical treatment for paralyzed diaphragm. The have the best Whipple surgery doctors. Patients have told me often how glad they were to be at UAB because they knew it was a good hospital. They also told me that being a UAB hospital will follow me anywhere I go. They trusted me. They trusted UAB. UAB has its own medical school, and it offers many healthcare professional degrees at their university. It is one of the most sought universities in the country.
The hospital welcomes all kind of students of different nations. Diversity brings with it richness to innovations and ideas in medicine. They are very open to hiring new graduate nurses immediately something I noticed other hospitals have been so shy to do. UAB being a teaching hospital is not scared of training new graduate students knowing that they will be great future nurses being trained by UAB. A hospital is more attractive to nurses and doctors if they know that they will be trained properly. UAB is not afraid of "lack of experience". They will find the person to orient with and through monthly evaluations and meetings they will determine where you need more training and will provide that for you at no cost to you. They will also pay to further your education and they encourage more education and training.
When I moved to Florida, and I wanted to apply for an RN job I looked for magnet hospitals in Florida. I think I realize the importance of patient care and safety by being a magnet hospital. I feel that a magnet hospital can help me become a skilled and safer nurse. I would also like to be a good listener. Many patients give up on their provider for lack of being heard. I believe the patient knows themselves well and the information they provide is critical for diagnosis. I would like to be great at my job and be known to patients as the nurse practitioner that can truly help them and makes very little to no errors. I would like to be a nurse that adopts the ANA's mission for contributing to the magnet status of a hospital which says, “The Magnet Recognition Program will continually elevate patient care around the world in an environment where nurses, in collaboration with the interprofessional team flourish by setting the standard for excellence through leadership, scientific discovery and dissemination and implementation of new knowledge" (ANA, 2022)
