Rough Draft Paper 1

In modern days, there are so many different ways that present information. Newspaper, magazines are the traditional ones. The digital media become more and more pervasive. However, all of them all utilizes the same way to express opinions – visual expression. Political Cartoon and Opinion ads are two of the important ones to present problems and promote actions among target groups.

Breen, Steve. “Political Cartoon on the Corona Virus.”

The above picture is an example of political cartoon. In order to understanding the meaning of the cartoon, it’s important to know at least a little bit about the context of the cartoons.(America Now) In this cartoon by Steve Breen. The audience should have read about the news: Trump and the First lady all tested positive for Corona Virus. The carton also shows that wearing masks is essential and right choice in current days. Right before the news come out, Trump haven’t wear masks for his campaign. Steve draws Uncle Sam, which is the symbol of America. In this cartoon, Uncle Sam is the main Iconography. By drawing Uncle Sam wearing the mask, Steve wants to convey the message that all Americans should start to wear masks. Cartoon always used irony, here the example use irony as well. On the board holding by Uncle Sam, the first line notes “wish the president and the first lady a full recovery”. It’s sarcastic because in the real world, people are actually “celebrates” trump’s inflection. It’s also funny to put the second notes “wear masks” after the first one. The example of infection of President Trump because of not wearing a mask is a great illustration to the point of wearing masks.

Kai, Wang. “Shuangpu Police Office warn you.”

The above is an example of Opinion Ads on wire fraud. There are actually many forms of Opinion Ads, like mails from the organizations, political commercials, newspaper and so on. (America Now) This example is one of the posters that are designed by the police office, which is trying to alert the public about the pervasive wire fraud. Those ads are initiated because there are more and more cases on citizens get cheated out of money through phone and internet. This poster is unique because they are not posted on wall or board like other posters, but is posted on the coffee cups and any other milk shake cups. The ads use a main image of two police officers, which clearly address the topic, which is on safety. Under the image, the ads put big illustration texted “Shuangpu Police Office warn you!!” And the body text which is the main message of the ads is below in smaller type. It wrote “don’t’ trust to any types of wire fraud, and don’t be greedy so that you will not be cheated.”

Both of these two examples successfully illustrate the context and well address their suggestions. The example of political cartoon well presents the news on the infection of president and the first lady by drawing Uncle Sam wearing mask. The example of Opinion Ads indicates the increasing cases on wire fraud by carefully put the warning title and carefully selected text. Both of them well promote actions. For the cartoon, Steve suggests all Americans to wear masks by playing the irony between the fact that president get infected and his carelessness on putting mask. And for the Opinion Ads, the target groups are actually those young adults. The ads are put on those coffee cups and milk shake cups that only bought by the younger generations. Police office particularly wants those parts of generation to be alert about the wire fraud.

In the real worlds, we can see a lots of examples of visual expressions of opinions which are similar to those two examples. They use the same techniques. We generally notice there are lots of advertisements on products, but there are actually a lots of opinion ads like this example of posters by police office. Opinion ads are usually consisting of a main image and the body text just like this one. Political Cartoon too as another main way of visual expression always appear on newspaper or social media. All of the political cartoon like this one all uses Iconography and Irony to illustrates the message. Both of the examples of political cartoon and the ads are successful as they correctly select their image and text to convey their point and promote actions among the group.
