Clinical Psychology and Counselling Psychology
The article selected for this paper is one titled “How special are the specialties? Workplace settings in counselling and clinical psychology in the United States.” Psychology in this article is defined as a subject that is not only distinct but one that is also mixed given the fact that it involves various practices and studies. The article covers the two main specialities important in behavioural and emotional disorders that are clinical psychology and counselling psychology. Clinical psychology is the one that is interested in mental illnesses that is their assessment as well as their treatment. This field of psychology makes up the largest specialty in psychology and it focuses on psychological dysfunction, disability, and Rehabilitation. Clinical psychologists usually work in counselling centres, independent or group practices, hospitals, or clinics (Neimeyer et al, 2011, p. 1).
Counselling psychology is one that is concerned with how individuals function on the personal and the interpersonal level across their lifespan. Professions in this field of psychology can be divided into called psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioural psychologists (Neimeyer et al, 2011, p. 2). This profession centres on emotional, social, vocational, educational health-related Development, and organizational concern.
Professionals in either of the fields have to work with different other professionals because more often than not underlying issues are broader than the manifest problem. For example, an individual can have mental illness due to family issues and there is a need to work with a family therapist. The difference between clinical and counselling psychology is theoretical in nature. Research has depicted that the difference in these two exists in the distinction that is there in their model of training.
For this article, I chose this article clinical psychology is my area of profession. Currently, I am a mental health specialist working with individuals on emotional social and Vocational. For this reason, I am quite curious not only about human behaviour but also about the human mind. More to this, I love helping other individuals develop some interest in mental processes as well as health.
