Introduction
Eboni Logan is a teenager who has dreams of pursuing higher education and becoming a nurse. She, however, discovers that she is pregnant and faces a dilemma. The options availed by the parents make it difficult for her. Her mother, who has no religious affiliation, believes that the best option is to terminate the pregnancy. On the other hand, her father thinks abortion is a sin as he identifies himself as Catholic. The dilemma leaves Eboni confused because she is afraid of the rejection and negative attitude the mother gives her. excellent summary -concise and professional
Presenting Problems
Eboni Logan’s case shows several problems. First, the negative relationship with her mother and grandmother, also she is expectant and in school concurrently; this is enough pressure to affect her education. The most difficult problem is deciding whether to keep the pregnancy or terminate the baby. Her boyfriend is young and unable to provide for them. At first, he sounded not ready and then promised to take care of them. However, she is not sure whether he will keep his promise, and hence she must decide whether to keep the pregnancy or not considering many opinions. Therefore, Eboni requires support to decide what’s best for her while being able to concentrate in school at the same time. Good
Goals for the Client
According to this case, Eboni has several goals. Eboni needs to have a good relationship with her parents and grandmother regardless of which decision she makes. The second goal is to understand the impact of the pregnancy with school, her career, and other responsibilities. She understands that there must be a change in her plans and dreams of becoming a nurse. However, teen pregnancy does not have to stop her from pursuing her education. Therefore, she wants to understand how she can make it even after the pregnancy issue. In summary, the agreed upon goals are (1) improving relationships with her mother and grandmother and (2) making a decision about her unplanned pregnancy.
Understanding of the Problem
A scholarly article that can inform understanding of the problem/population, development of goals, or intervention and treatment plan is Silk and Romero (2014) on “the role of parents and families in teen pregnancy prevention.” Neglect by the parents characterizes teenage pregnancies. According to according to Silk and Romero (2014), parents are less accepting of adolescent pregnancies, especially with their daughters. They communicate less with pregnant teenagers. The family develops this negative attitude because they expect another family member who will require a great deal of care and attention (Cristol &Gimbert, 2008). The parents also have expectations and goals that they wish to have their children achieve. However, the situation is different when the older daughter gets pregnant early. Silk and Romero state that proper communication is the best intervention because it will help the parents to understand their daughter (2014). It is also through communication that the family at large can develop common goals. It would have been ideal for you to connect the important of improving communication with family member and her ability to make a decision about her pregnancy. Impacts of Racism and Ethnocentrism
Racism influences teenage pregnancies because many factors are contributing to it. The girls from minority races such as Eboni are exposed to poverty (Melchert, 2015). This makes it easier for them to engage in illicit relationships and get pregnant. On the other hand, the white population have access to the best schools and have finances for better living. Family environments, peer influences and dating approaches, and sexual experience make it easier for the minority races to become pregnant. Ethnocentrism may negatively influence the case of Eboni. Early pregnancies are associated with poverty and poor parenting (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). As such, using the culture of others, Eboni would seem irresponsible, less focused, and someone with no focus in life. Comment by kathleen darby: These ideas need to be supported with evidence and written in a more professional tone.
