Review of Literature
There are two prophylactic vaccines against the spread of HPV that are available in the United States. The first is Gardasil, a quadrivalent vaccine which is the focus of our study and Cervarix, a bivalent vaccine. No current studies have shown any medications to be superior to Gardasil. However, physicians have shown a bias in the use of Gardasil more as it theoretically prevents infection from more subtypes of cancer. The vaccines are administered in a three-dose package running six months. The FDA has recently approved an alternative two-series dose (Lewis et al., 2013). As earlier highlighted, all the studies so far show that they are very efficacious in preventing infection. The Patricia trials show 100% efficacy with the vaccines (De Vicenco, 2014).
There are many challenges that interact to determine the acceptance of a vaccine by the community. Such factors tend to cut across all the vaccines but, as stated earlier, the response to Gardasil has been below what would be expected from a vaccine as efficacious as it is. It has been postulated that thee general reluctance of parents to discuss matters of sexual health and education with their children has been a major hindrance to the use of the Gardasil vaccine (Maggie, 2013).
