RETAIL MANAGEMENT/BAMK 2204
VERSION -3 -SEMESTER-2 (2019-2020)
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION NOT LESS THAN 100 WORDS EACH
(10QX5M=50MARKS)
1. Case Analysis: Carefully read the case below and answer the questions that
follows with suitable justifications.
Protecting Wireless Communications at Olympia
Olympia is a 140-store family-owned sporting goods, apparel, and footwear
retailer. It recently launched a Wi-Fi system that was to be used for such store
management functions as inventory management, price lookup, returns
processing with vendors, and a communication link with field supervisors and
district managers. A major concern to Olympia has been the protection of its Wi-
Fi system from hacking and other breaches. The PCI Security Council has issued
compliance guidelines for retailers and other organizations that process
electronic payments through local area networks (LANs) to protect these data.
The council has also recommended that large firms use automated anti-intrusion
systems.
By using wireless anti-intrusion systems, retailers and other organizations can
check for unauthorized devices, bogus files, and rogue clients on their networks.
During a test of its new system at its Oman Avenue Mall, Olympia identified
several security issues that needed to be resolved. Olympia also plans to adapt its
Wi-Fi system for consumer usage. Potential consumer applications include
hotspot access points, multi-channel capabilities, and in-store payment
processing. Olympia will have to expand its online security system even further
to cover these new applications.

3. Case Analysis: Carefully read the case below and answer the questions that
follows with suitable justifications.
Superstores, hypermarkets and category killers in shopping malls rarely use
window displays, but have bold fascia and easy to access entrances. Standalone
stores may have to conform to strict architectural guidelines imposed by
government planning authorities, whilst the centre management team may
control the exterior of stores in a planned regional shopping centre. Entrances
can be designed to be open and welcoming, or closed and exclusive. A key
consideration for retailers is the need to be accessible for all members of society.
The interior of a store can be viewed in a similar way to living space. It
comprises ceiling, walls, flooring and lighting, but instead of furniture retail
outlet houses fixtures for the presentation of merchandise, and fittings for
equipment such as tills. In choosing the materials used for the interior, retailers
have to consider the type of product being sold, costs, store traffic and health
and safety.
Questions for Discussions:
A. What do you understand by store fascia? (1M)
B. Do you agree that stores having attractive store fascia have customer flow?
(2M).
C. Apart from store fascia do you consider store interior as another factor for
increase in customer traffic. Justify you answer. (2M)
4. Is the wheel of retailing theory applicable today? Why or why not? (2.5M+2.5M).
5. Analyse and explain is non-store retailing gaining traction in Oman? Justify
your answer. (1M+4M).
6. Why is store location such an important decision for retailers? Elucidate. (5M)
7. From the retailer’s perspective, compare the benefits of locating in unplanned
business districts versus planned shopping centres. (2.5M+2.5M)
8. Analyse and explain does the supermarkets in Oman inculcate tracking stock
levels in real time? (5M)
9. As a new retailer, how would you research the attributes of a specific supplier?
Elucidate. (5M)
10. Suggest and explain which layout is most suitable for large stores that are single
