Tiffany Discussion:
CUNY City College does an excellent job of recruiting a racially diverse student body, but lacks geographic diversity-only 4% are non-residents. Targeting this group will increase tuition revenues as they pay twice as much. Highlighting research opportunities and their location in Manhattan for hands-on experience via internship opportunities should help attract and retain students. On the topic of retention, it was one of the threats identified, as it has been trending downward lately. Based on analysis of peer school offerings and New York's BSN in 10 law (buffalo.edu) requiring RNs to receive a bachelor's within 10 years of initial licensure, I recommended adding a nursing program. This was further supported by BLS statistics and the fact that the nursing shortage is expected to reach an all time high in five years (Daniel & Smith, 2018). This seems even more important in this pandemic we are facing. I guess the good news is that this week's reading states medical school enrollment has been increasing since 2009 (Hossler & Bontrager, 2015, p. 509). Stay healthy everyone!

Vera Discussion:
I started this research on Western Carolina University (WCU) because it is close to my rental property and eventual retirement home in North Carolina. I have a vague plan of perhaps working there when I retire from the hospital. I viewed the schools as a rural university setting that perhaps could use some help in the enrollment department. What I found was something very different. WCU has worked hard over the last decade to remake itself into a vibrant modern college with high marks in student retention and an increasing enrollment (Studenc, 2018).
Using a strong Strategic Plan developed in 2014, this school and its administration have developed strong community relationships, built vibrant educational programs, and remodeled the infrastructure of the campus. No longer a sleepy state university, WCU is fast becoming a significant force in the community and region. From employing and using local labor to exporting students to the regional economy, WCU is an important player in Western North Carolina. Their outreach programs pleasantly surprised me with their willingness to talk about the lack of diversity in enrollment. The communication internally and externally seems to be transparent and frequent with newsletters and events that tout the schools' educational and athletic programs.
Due to the NC Promise program and the low tuition, student debt is not nearly as problematic at WCU compared to other institutions of higher education. However, that said, nearly 80% of the schools' students are participating in some form of financial aid (WCU, 2020). In a rural and economically challenged area, even the low annual cost at WCU is too much for most local students. The school is trying to make need-based financial decisions in both enrollment and financial aid and I think currently doing a good job.
When the time comes, I hope I can find a position in this school that over the last decade has proved to have solid values and a willingness to grow. If they remain on the strategic path and follow their mission and vision, they will continue to grow and prosper. Although Enrollment Management is probably not my ultimate role, I have learned a great deal about as I studied this part of higher education and WCU’s strong offering in this arena.
Have a great week all and be safe!
