Chapter 8

Some of the biggest constraining factors to keep someone from taking an expatriate assignment include language barriers, cultural differences, and social behaviors. Learning a different language is an obvious factor for me to think of when considering an expatriate assignment; however, I admittedly had not taken into account some of the social behaviors that I consider to be normal may be perceived as rude or hostile in a foreign country. Therefore, I think another large factor is the family of the person considering the expatriate assignment. Having to relocate a spouse or children adds another set of factors to the decision. The spouse and/or children will also have to adapt to a new country, culture, and social norms, and they are less likely to receive any sort of training to prepare them for it.

Chapter 9

This discussion topic hits very close to home for me. I am currently in a position that delegates authority willingly and collaboratively. However, that has not always been the case. I spent the past several years in a department in which knowledge and access was regarded the same as power and authority. Individuals in the department did not openly communicate about the things that they knew out of fear that they would one day be replaced. Leaders did not train up their subordinates because they didn't want them to appear more knowledgeable or receive credit for tasks of which they had claimed ownership. In retrospect, I see how damaging the reluctance to delegate authority can be on a department and team members. The subordinates didn't receive proper training nor credit for work done well. The employee morale in the department suffered, and team members ultimately transferred to different areas that encouraged professional growth.

Chapter 10

The advantage to working with a group is that you don't have do everything yourself. More work can be done quicker. You share the responsibly of the project.

I believe that their are more disadvantages to working in groups. If one person doesn't follow through with their part the project is in trouble. For example if one person is suppose to take pictures for the project and they forget to take the pictures your group is in trouble. There might not be enough time for someone else to take the pictures.

I would rather do a big project by myself.

My experience with working in groups has been horrible. I have been let down being a part of small groups and disappointed working with large groups. When you are working on class projects and other people don't do their jobs it effects the whole groups grade. I have been there, done that, and would like to not do that again!
