Sylvia Discussion:

Hello everyone,

The school I chose for peer analysis is The University of Texas at San Antonio. The following list are the peer group institutions.

· University of Southern Alabama at Mobile

· University of Arkansas at Little Rock

· University of Florida A&M at Tallahassee

· University of Louisiana at Lafayette

· University of North Carolina at Wilmington

· University of North Dakota at Fargo

· University of Akron at Ohio

· University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

· Lamar University at Beaumont

· University of Texas at Tyler

·  Texas Women's University at Tyler

The university of Texas at San Antonio is a 4 year tier one research institution specializing in health, energy, security, sustainability and human and social development. Within the peer group there is only one school the University of South Alabama that has equal high research activity with a doctorate degree. Five of the other schools offer professional doctorate degrees with none and moderate research activity. Tuition and fees at UTSA are 8,049 with the average falling between 8,000-10,000. The highest tuition is from the University of Akron at 14,734. All of the peer group institutions had Pell Grants, scholarships and student loans available with the highest percentage going to undergraduates and the highest percentage of student loans going to graduates.

The peer group institutions are all from midsize to large cities and some have smaller campuses located in other parts of the city to accommodate most of the population. The population of San Antonio is predominantly Hispanic with UTSA having a 58% student population that is Hispanic, 23% white and 9% black. The peer group institutions are predominantly white, up to 76% and a range of 18% or lower Hispanic and 17% and lower black.

The University of Texas at San Antonio is distinctive from the peer group list not because if serves a predominant Hispanic population but, because it is a tier one institution with high research activity and is one of a few institutions with a cyber security and data science program. A competitor would be the University of South Alabama because of their high research activity and low tuition.

Brittany Discussion:

Hello, everyone, I hope you are well. I think after comparing two universities it has been a challenge to realize the cost benefit of what it means to be able to be affordable. I chose to compare two great universities Bowie State University and Southern New Hampshire University.

I found it very shocking to look at the demographics of SNHU being predominately Caucasian with 60% and only 16% being African American. I think due to the area or state of NH the population is geared towards that culture. I think the campus screams diversity, but they lack the diversity in the demographics for example, on SNHU commercials you see a variety of human beings some in the military and more than half of diverse beings. Bowie State University is a mostly African American population with only 3% of the students being Caucasian and 86% African due to the historical HBCU primarily serving students of that decent. The university is very low with racial diversity and minorities of color to add a different appearance of culture to the student life. Bowie’s gender diversity is 67% female and 38% men which is among close to SNHU who population of men is 43% and women 63%.

The annual cost of SNHU on campus is $51,538 and attending off campus is $51,156 with a 2% increase in tuition rates from 2015-2019. The cost of attendance for Bowie State in state MD residents $23,238 ad out of state $33,878 the tuition charges 16,176 for room and board and roughly 10,000 for books and supplies. The peer group institutions not including SNHU and BSU are as follow from the list below.

University of Maryland-College Park

University of Arizona -Arizona State

Virginia Union University

University of New Hampshire

University of Massachusetts

Massachusetts Academy

Boston University of Massachusetts

Rowan University

University of Maryland – John Hopkins program

Southern New Hampshire University

All the above colleges in the peer group have the same four year general areas of program studies. The most affordable and close to the online school peer group for distance learning with more course offerings. The similar groups all have the same cost of attendance rates which makes a more diverse student culture for the program of studies, which makes the university have some serious competition.
