RESPONSE TWO ASSIGNMENT: Dress Codes and "Modest" Dress: Reading Response Two Assignment (Articles and Videos)
Reading Response Two: Articles and Videos on Dress Codes and "Modest Dress"
NOTE: This assignment is meant to correspond to what you will be doing for Speech Two: presenting three different, mutually exclusive (all of them must disagree with each other) perspectives on a single controversial issue.
Response Two will cover multiple perspectives on the issue of dress codes and "modest" dress, as discussed and depicted in the print and video examples included in this section on ICON. Some argue that dress codes promote higher quality learning environments and are more equitable than not having them. Others feel they unfairly target girls or those who don't identify as binary. Still others feel they shift the blame from the perpetrator of abuse to the victims. There is no right or wrong answer to this controversy, and people on all sides (note that there are many more than two sides to a controversy) of the issue make strong points that deserve serious consideration.
Your job for this response is to read and view all of the written and video assignment materials in this section and then compare and contrast three different points of view (including one OR two sources per perspective) with respect to their different and conflicting perspectives on ONE of the following research questions (make sure the three perspectives you choose to cover disagree with each other on the issue you cover and that you include at least two of the assigned print articles in your response to avoid using only videos):
· Who, if anyone, should mandate dress codes or how one chooses to dress?
· What restrictions, if any, should schools place on how kids dress?
· How, if at all, is discrimination with respect to identity (race, sex, gender, class, etc.) relevant to dress code mandates?
· How important, if at all, is it for people (or women, if you prefer) to dress modestly?
· How much freedom, if any, should kids be permitted when it comes to fashion in a school environment?
· Any other open-ended research question you would like to cover that includes presentation of three different, mutually exclusive perspectives on the same issue.
Because this response is tied to Speech Two, in which you will present a spectrum of perspectives on the same issue without letting your personal bias get in the way, be careful not to take a personal stand on how you feel about the issue because your main concern is thinking about how these arguments exist on a spectrum and respectful and thorough representation of the authors' viewpoints you represent. Keep the focus on the different views expressed by the different sources. Include quotes and concrete textual examples/support for your claims.
