Brazil is a mixture of people. Brazilian values can be considered “traditional”. There is a man at the head of household and the wife takes care of the house and kids. Brazilians value family as the most important aspect of their lives. The language of Brazil is Portuguese. Although Brazil is a multiracial country, racism still runs rampant. The Brazilian census has 5 categories for race which are white, black, multi-racial, Asian, and indigenous. Although these categories exist, the lines are blurred. If there was someone was multiracial and had a lighter skin tone, a nice-paying job, and good social standing, they would be considered white. If you had someone with the same multiracial background but had a darker skin tone and was of a lower class, they would be considered multi-racial or black (Monk, 2016). Racism sometimes is portrayed as an American issue when really it is world-wide. There are people in brazil that despite being multi-racial, treat darker skin people badly just because of that. Not only that, but people in lower socio-economic status’ have next to no chance of escaping their bracket. Women are also subjected to a very misogynistic culture cultivated by the patriarchy. The best way for students to change their SES is to get very good grades and apply for federal or overseas programs in order to have a chance at something better. Most students from outlying states, move to big cities for job opportunities if school is not in the plans for their future.
