4. What should Mark have done if Jack still was not able to resolve the problem?

From the case study, it was clear that jack was the only one person who was capable and Mark can think off to resolve open/close mechanisms issues of planes. But what if jack couldn’t resolve the problem, what should mark have to do as an alternate option? To answer this, Mark can have couple of options - Ask jack to present all the roadblocks and obstacles for the reason not able to be successful in the project, Declare an open challenge to team and welcome any feedback from the team, Create a team who are expertise to solve complex problems and to work better as this would help to think a solution from multiple perspectives, Involve all the team members to focus on the problem and then divide work in bits and parts and solve accordingly to their knowledge and skill set (Kerzner, 2017).

5. Would it make sense for Mark to assign this problem to someone else now after Jack could not solve the problem the second time around?

I believe Mark would consider Jack is the one only solution to solve the complex problem but when Jack said he wasn’t able to solve the issue at first time. Mark consider giving a second thought to team members as he thought it's worth trying in giving a chance to other co-workers as everyone in the team has their own perspectives towards the problem. In my view, It would be better to assign to multiple resources having good experience and skill set because jack might not aware of some of the aircraft designs and he might miss few of the important steps (Kerzner, 2017).
