DB TWO – WEEK 3 6

My topic: Does television have a negative influence on society?

Thesis Statement: Even though televisions are viewed as a source for educational and entertainment purposes, they ultimately increase one’s chances for obesity, can be a major time-waster, and can cause children to develop emotional and behavioral problems.

My thesis statement fits the six qualities described in chapter nine. It has specificity because it narrows down the negative effects of watching too much television into sub-topics. It has precision because I will be able to discuss each negative effect in detail and the essay will be organized. It has the ability to be argued because people can argue that television's educational and entertainment purposes outweigh the negative effects. It has the ability to be demonstrated because I have credible evidence to support my argument for each negative effect. It has forcefulness because I will be able to take a stance against watching too much television and supply counter-arguments that I can refute. Finally, it has confidence because I will state the facts in order to stress my points to my audience and avoid using first person.

All in all, it is important to write an essay with evidence, facts, and counter-arguments to refute them. The essay needs to be credible and have a strong stance in order for the audience to continue reading your essay.
