Respones DQ 5-1

Define political behavior in your own words. Explain why you feel the way you do by providing real-world examples of political behavior.

1.

I feel that political behavior is biased and about influencing others to accommodate or follow your views (Johnson, 2018). This influence could come from a political person or group of people. The larger groups are obvious, like republican or democrat. Political behavior is the effort to influence while acting in the way that best suits the role required to accomplish those goals. I feel that it is similar to acting in that politicians are rarely the person that they purport themselves to be. As a citizen, it is important to keep that in mind when watching different political character address the masses. We have to ask ourselves what the real message is and consider all the factors, because political behavior is also rarely altruistic. I feel that there is almost always some sort of back story that lends a lot of perspective to the message. Political behavior is about there being a just as significant a message in what you do not say as there is in what you do say.

We see examples when we listen to any president’s goals. Trump and his wall or Obama and health care. Sure the message sounds great but neither really addressed how they would be paid for or what those numbers means to the working class portion of the country that actually pays the bills in the United States. There are other examples like here in Albuquerque NM, where the mayor pushed through a rapid transit system that ended up costing the city millions and still does not work and may never work. Sure the idea of rapid transit sounds just as good as a wall or free health care, but who is paying the bill.

Political behavior is rarely about communicating the entire story.

Political behavior is seeing with individuals and groups that may influence their peers or try to avoid the influence from others. This is a behavior that is seeing through politics and power. This not a formal group but rather informal that sometimes sell political ideas, gain power, all to reach a target goal. We see political behavior in the workplace just with the use of authority and power, at work we have an objective and we influence change to make it happen. “Thus, leader political support can be defined as leaders’ tactical or strategic use of power or influence to provide for, advocate for, or otherwise aid followers by attempting to alter the distribution of advantages within the organization in followers’ favor” (Ellen, 2018). I think a great real life example is the NRA, has a major influence on the public and politics by generating interest in the group regarding membership, gun ownership, gun laws, hunting and gun safety. The lobbying side of the organization has a message of advocating for gun owners and freedom of speech. In many cases we have seen in school shootings the need to change gun control laws, but the government power is much less when it comes to the interest group.
