A literature review is an important part of research that offers an overview of sources a researcher explores during research. One of its significance is that it illustrates how a particular fits within a broad field of study (Schmidt, & Brown, 2018). In that respect, it identifies inconstancies within the research – gaps in a study, conflicts in earlier studies, open questions left from other research. It also not only justifies research but also determines the association of works regarding their contribution to the topic and other works. Another important contribution of a literature review is that it places personal research work within the context of existing literature, highlighting a case for why further study is needed (Schmidt, & Brown, 2018).

A literature review is classified into four main types. First is the traditional literature reviews. Traditional literature review critique and précises a literature body in relation to its thesis topic (Chernyadyev, Ufimtseva, Vishnevskaya, Bochkarev, Ushakov, Beresneva, & Khodakov, 2018). In this capacity, it gives the author and reader an inclusive impression of the topic and focuses on significant areas of research.  The second one is scoping reviews which differ since there is no restriction on the material source (Chernyadyev et al, 2018). Instead, the type only focuses on finding the material of the topic. Thirdly, is the Pickering systematic quantitative literature review which is a detailed guide of system review having links to visual sources.  Finally are the Cochrane literature reviews. These are different because they involve systematic reviews of human health care and health laws (Chernyadyev et al, 2018). Therefore, it makes it highly recognized in evidence-based healthcare.

The components of a literature review include a description of the publication, a summary of the publication's main points, a discussion of gaps in research, and an evaluation of the publication's contribution to the topic (Schmidt & Brown, 2018).
