Assignment: Concept Analysis

RESOURCEFORASSIGNMENT.docx

The objective of the definition of a concept is to provide meaning to an idea that promotes understanding, communication, consistency of use, clarity, and structure (Gray et al., 2017; Walker & Avant, 2019). I don’t see a definition of motivation in your posting. A definition needs to promote understanding, communication, use, clarity, and structure.  Can you propose a definition that meets these requirements?

Concepts need to be defined so that the research design is appropriate and measurement tools are valid and align with the concept and design (Cronin et al., 2010). Defining concepts allows us to see the concept and its function within a theory allowing us the ability to understand precisely what is described, explained, or predicted (Walker & Avant, 2019). As you can see, the definition of the concept is critically important and key to the entire research process.

Dr. Donna Hathaway (Laureate Education, 2014) emphasized that concepts are narrower in focus. During the process of concept definition, Dr. Hathaway stressed that the focus should be on the concept not the context and that exploration should take place outside the field of nursing. I think you might be focusing too much on context – nursing and nurse leaders.

Dr. Fowler,

Thank you for a good feedback and great question. Motivation is defined as the desire to achieve a goal or a certain performance level, leading to goal-directed behavior. When we refer to someone as being motivated, we mean that the person is trying hard to accomplish a certain task. Motivation is clearly important if someone is to perform well; however, it is not suficient.(Robbins & Judge, 2018).

Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is one of the best known early theories of motivation. The theory is broken down into five needs: physiological, safety-security, social-belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization (Robbins & Judge, 2018). Each need is considered to be a level of hierarchy in that once one is fulfilled, the next level is desired. The lower levels are more focused on survival while the higher levels shift gears towards success. I think this theory of motivation is still applicable since I think it still represents how people view life today. At a fundamental level, everyone needs food, water, and some form of shelter and security to survive. Once those are achieved, then you can focus on being all you can be. However, I think Maslow’s hierarchy falls shorts by one step and one study in particular fills the gap. There should be a need to help others or a state of consciousness. This is achieved by moving beyond the confines of personal ego (Soni & Soni, 2016). Once you help yourself fulfill the five original needs, you should try to help others fulfill theirs.

McClelland’s theory of needs are more based on motivating factors than needs for survival. The three needs are the need for achievement, power, and affiliation (Robbins & Judge, 2018). With respect today, I see the need for achievement motivating people to want to do better than others. Whether is a job or a sport, people want to be the best at what they do. Power and affiliation go hand in hand in that good leaders and managers today want to be both feared and respected. They should have control over their team yet they should get to know their subordinates on a personal level to improve employee engagement.

Dr. Fowler,

Thank you for the great feedback. These define attributes of motivation. According to McClelland Human Motivation Theory(also known as Three Needs Theory)  , every individual has these three types of motivational needs irrespective of their demography, culture or wealth. These motivation types are driven from real-life experiences and the views of their ethos.

-achievement, has a strong need to set and accomplish challenging goals.

-affiliation, wants to belong to the group.

-power- wants to control and influence others(McClelland, 1990)

Remember that at least two authors have to say that achievement, affiliation, and power are defining attributes of motivation. Did McClelland identify at least two references for each defining attribute - is this is the case, you can use these and not McCelland's work.
