In the movie, Spider-Man into the Verse, follow the story of Miles Morales who is trying to take the mantle of Spider-Man in his universe with the help of his mentor, Peter B. Parker from another universe where he is down on his luck. Not only does Miles have to struggle with taking hold of his identity and role but it causes Peter to reflect and want to become a better version of himself. Both characters in this movie walk a difficult road that challenges their resilience.

Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse follows the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales, who takes up the mantle after the Spider-Man, Peter Parker, is killed trying to stop Kingpin from activating the super-collider that opens the multiverse. Miles receives help from different spider people from different universes to help stop Kingpin and find a way home from them.

Starting with Peter B. Parker, we get to see a condensed version of his back story. He lived as Spider-Man and was able to marry Mary Jane, long time crush in the comic books. Things would go downhill for him as he got older, from bad financial choices to getting divorced, having bones broken and his back too. “No matter how many hits I take, I always find a way to come back.” This quote is the one he gives during screenshot above as he moves on to talk about how he coped after the divorce and moving out to his own place. Rik Worth said it best about Peter, “The potential of ‘I could be great if I just didn’t have to deal with homework/money/family issues’ that we recognized in a young Peter is converted to ‘work/money/family will always be an issue’,” This Peter is contrasted by the one in Miles’ universe, who has gone on to be successful and rich. Peter does not try his best and he acknowledges the change he has to make when talking to Mary Jane of Miles’ universe. In this scene he rants about how he could do better for Mary Jane and could have been by her side when she needed him. This is reflected through out the movie as he tries his hardest to be the Spider-Man Miles needs to show him the road of a hero. During the ending of the movie, Peter goes to Mary Jane with flowers to talk and repair what was broken. It is at this point Peter has bounced back from living at his lowest part of his life.

Miles starts off with hope of being mentored by the Spider-Man in his universe who had been successful but is quickly killed off. This is where Miles drops off, he could’ve have saved this Spider-Man since he has the strength and ability to but does not jump into action and opts to running away. Later meets the other universe Spider-Man. This new mentorship helps Miles along the way. Nikki Martyn of The Conversation shares this sentiment, “It’s a reminder that we are not on our own and that we need each other; we are stronger together. It reminds us of the importance of connection, relationships and asking for help.”
