Research Proposal Template Guidelines

The purpose of the templates is to provide a uniform structure to aid in the quality of the final research proposal manuscript. Embedded within each template is general information about formatting and content along with information specific to either a qualitative or quantitative research design and each section includes a brief overview of instructions for the anticipated content you will submit. Throughout either template, you will compose content unique to your proposed study and insert into each respective section of the research proposal. Before you submit the document for grading, you will need to delete the instructions.

There are two templates: one for qualitative research and one for quantitative research. Please make sure to work within the template that corresponds to your general research design. If adopting a mixed-methods approach, you will need to combine aspects of both templates, using one as your main prototype. Remember, even though mixed-methods studies are complementary of both ‘qual’ and ‘quan’ designs, one approach usually dominates over the other and hence, the template you choose as your primary should reflect this consideration.

Formatting

All manuscripts should follow the latest version of the APA style manual. Easy access to this information is located on the University’s webpage: APA Format Quick Guide. There is also a link to this webpage in the instructions folder for this course. Nonetheless, there are certain formatting aspects of the templates that do not adhere to current APA style but are important for the structure of a research proposal. You must also make sure to update respective page numbers in the table of contents. Beyond these issues, do not alter the overall structure or format of the document.

Content

In general, submitting your own previously published work as new scholarship constitutes self-plagiarism however, for the purposes of this course you are allowed to reuse previously submitted work from your research drafts in this manuscript. If you have done a thorough job on several of the drafts, then you will be well on your way to completing many of the sections in the templates. Lastly, you are also welcome to use, with discretion, a few of the ‘starter’ or example phrases and sentences embedded in this template. However, please keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of what is submitted for grading is a manuscript written in your own words.
