5 pages research project
Research Proposal (32 points) Due March 15 at 11:59 p.m. on Canvas
Purpose: develop a proposal for a community-engaged research project. You will do a literature review, propose a research question, and method of study. You will also theorize possible findings based on your literature review and own experiences. Instructions: drawing on your studies as UCSC and what we have learned in CLTE 35, propose a community-engaged study using either: 1. critical service learning, 2. participatory action research, or 3. photovoice. You have the freedom to propose a study on whatever topic is of interest to you. The proposal will cite articles from our class as well at least 2 outside references. The proposal will be 4-7 pages. If you work in a group these numbers go up 1.5x per group member (e.g. for groups of 2, you’ll need 4 outside references and 6-10 pages; for a group of 3, you’ll need 6 outside references and 8-15 pages). The outline of your paper could look like:
● Introduction ● Literature review ● Method of study ● Predicted results ● References
Introduction: What is a social issue that is urgent and pressing right now; describe this issue for the reader. Describe a place, site, location, group of people that you would like to study and take action on this issue with. What is your connection to this issue? (You don’t have to be able to do this study right now. But it would be good to propose something you could do for a senior thesis, for example.) Literature review: You will need to find two quality references for your literature review. The references should come from a scholarly database like JSTOR or Google scholar. Ideally, the references will be empirical studies on your topic of research. In some cases, there may not be a peer-reviewed article for your study; in this case, let me know. Methods: Describe your research site: why did you choose it? Who is the community? What is your relationship to the community? Be sure to present the community in a desire-based way rather than damaged. Then, describe your method of study. What is this method and why did you choose it? Refer to the article(s) in class that we read on this method. Predicted results: The results are likely not quantitative results in charts or tables. But rather what do you think would happen in your study? What would the community do together? What would be
the successes and what would be the challenges? What would be the action step after the research is done?
