ABSTRACT

The first amendment protects freedom of speech. The freedom of speech has; however, been violated on various occasions. This paper examines how the first amendment has been violated by political campaign manipulations and different types of speech in schools and how they can be exploited. Social media platforms regulate the way people express themselves. As a result, social media platforms have often regulated the way students should express themselves amongst their peers. Political leaders tend to use social media platforms during campaigns. They understand that they must get hold of such platforms to gain a large number of people to vote for them. A large number of social media users make the apps good platforms for communicating with people. Opinion polls are regularly conducted on social media platforms to determine the likely winner of an upcoming election. Many politicians have exploited various social media platforms arguing based on freedom of speech. They have misused the media and violated the freedom of speech through manipulation of their supremacy in various social media platforms.

Students are guaranteed freedom of expression. However, the learners are not allowed to express certain elements that affect them under constitutional rights even though freedom of speech is guaranteed in schools. This helps to reduce cases of riots and the efforts of students to explore their potential in speech. Students might exploit their freedom of speech in schools and this could lead to riots. Even though the students in public schools have the freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment, the US Supreme Court denies any school going student the opportunity to exercise his/her constitutional right to freedom of speech. Normal school programs might be interfered with if the students are allowed to exercise their freedom of speech. However, the limit on freedom of speech by some schools violates the First Amendment.
