Board members should make changes for staff retention in nonprofit sector

Proposition

Staff retention has long been a problem in the nonprofit sector. Organizations spend time and money training employees only to see them leave after a few years, right when they have become fully productive. Retention is mostly a function of management, but boards play a role too.

I Opening Paragraph

Employee retention has been a serious problem in the field of nonprofit organizations. Every nonprofit organization wants to train and cultivate some excellent employees who can always work for the organization many years. However, the problem is that when the applicants and novices get professional training and learn more knowledge, they would decide to choose a better nonprofit organization with high salary and good prospect. Therefore, I think the governance and board members should make some critical changes and new policies to reduce this kind of situation.

II The Problem

a. the average level of salary is a very important factor, the job of board members is to budget money for one year, it is very important job for board members, because the amount of money will influence the decision of chief executive officer. Chief executive officer should think about how to allocate and distribute money to every employees. For those experienced employees who have been working for several years, board members should pay more salaries to employees in order to keep them to stay.

b. The second problem is that employee benefits should be increased and provided, and it includes working environment, retirement funding and health insurance. Board members should think about how to provide employee welfare for staffs.

c. I think the third problem is employee’s happiness. One of the job for chief executive officer is establishing employee’s happiness. Chief executive officer should treat the staffs like family members, so that staffs will feel comfortable in the organization. Chief executive officer often take care of employees, employees would feel they are important for the organization and the organization needs them. In addition, board members play a key role, board members have to evaluate the chief executive officer by collecting annual reports in order to check the performance of chief executive officer.

III Advantages of changing policies for staff retention

a. By changing policies of the organization, it can reduce the rate of loosing employees. However, that is not enough for board members and chief executive officer. As leaders, they have to always think and ask themselves, how could the policy can be more successful? By keeping changing the policy, it can save time and energy to hire new employees.

b. By reducing the loosing of old staffs, it can help board members and the organization to save more funds of training new employees and these funds can be used on other charity activities.

c. The organization will become more influential and more effective. By changing the policies, staffs will work harder and pay more effort on the organization.

IV Conclusion

Staff retention is a serious problem for board members and the organization, and I think board members play a very important role. Effective function of management can reduce the happen of this situation. Board members and chief executive officer need to know not only how to cultivate with donors and operate the organization, but also know how to take care of employees for future development of the organization.
