Individual Written Report

This research paper of about 1500-1800 words will examine in more detail one of the major concepts in organizational theory. The report will be based on detailed research of some concept, issue or domain related to organizational theory.

The focus of this paper is NOT typical organizational or strategic work on 'how to organize” an organization to achieve goals or strategic analysis/formulation, but rather looking at some course-related theme in organizational theory (e.g., institutional theory, resource dependence, new market category creation and emergence, legitimation of organizational identity, legitimacy of entrepreneurial ventures etc….). Organizational theory covers a wide array of organizational topics. Hence, your paper can focus on any one of these many topics. For instance, you may decide to research theories that discuss how organizations reduce their vulnerabilities of resource dependence (e.g., mergers and acquisitions). Pioneers of the resource dependence theory include Pfeffer and Salancik (1978) for instance. Another topic you may consider is institutional isomorphism or why organizations are all the same (e.g., see DiMaggio and Powell, 1983). Other topics include how leaders influence organizational culture or service entrepreneurship whereby companies are offering more services etc…

The expectation is that research journals will be consulted for this paper, though they need not be the only or primary source. Business magazines are not considered adequate primary sources for this kind of report. 'A' level papers will need to have several current journal references from a variety of sources. You are welcome consult with me on your choice of topic. Please keep a file of your research sources and your rough notes and drafts from this research project.

Potential Journals may include the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Academy of Management Review. Formatting – Double space, 12 point font, Time-Roman Font.
