research paper
Topic: Environmental Pollution
Note: last sentence in the introduction paragraph is my thesis statement. Focus on it.
Second, the two paragraphs after the introduction are done, but I still need to add paraphrased citations in under to support my main points on each paragraph. I’ll add the articles I want to use around the research paper and don’t use to many citations, just enough to support my points. Professor instructions will be added as well in the files so you can follow what she wants.
The Earth’s human population has been increasing at a rapid pace for centuries; since 1800, when the human population is thought to have first reached 1 billion, the number has grown over sevenfold — in 2017, the global population was estimated to be 7.6 billion. This population explosion has introduced numerous challenges and sparked debate over issues related to the sustainability of the planet and its resources. One of the pertinent problems confronting our planet is that of environmental pollution, the process by which Earth’s environment is contaminated to the extent that entire areas become hazardous or uninhabitable both for human and animal populations. The contamination that causes these regions to become unfit to sustain life can be physical, biological, or chemical, and although there are several ways in which it has been known to occur they almost invariably involve some form of human activity damaging to the environment, the rate of which continues to increase alongside industrial growth throughout the world. The effects of environmental pollution involve consequences that are far-reaching and worthy of concern — among other things, continued pollution disrupts ecosystems throughout the world, destroying habitats and endangering species in those regions. The pollution of the environment across air, land, and water ranks among the most pressing issues of our time, and steps should and can be taken immediately by both the government and the public to adopt practices that reduce and prevent its damage to the planet.
The pollution of the Earth’s bodies of water takes on various forms, both physical and chemical. Water can be polluted by point sources, which are sources that directly affect water and can be easily reduced and monitored, and by non-point sources, which are sources that are not released in a specific identifiable point. As the global population’s production and usage of non-biodegradable substances such as plastic has increased, so has the production of waste composed of these substances. Billions of tons of waste plastic, glass, and other substances flood into seas and oceans each year, dirtying the water, harming animals that consume them, and threatening ecosystems due to the population imbalances introduced by the killing of animals. Often, factories and large ships also empty toxic waste substances into bodies of water, killing coral reefs, threatening various species, and rendering entire lakes and rivers unsustainable for life. Humans are not exempt from these consequences — in poorer countries, where people rely on lakes, rivers, and wells as primary sources of water, many die each year as a result of the consumption of contaminated water. Because of the colossal rate at which the pollution of water occurs, it is a difficult problem to combat. Governments can, however, introduce stricter regulations that penalize and fine corporations and factories for the pollution of water. Tax exemptions or benefits can also be granted to companies which adopt environmental-friendly policies. Educational awareness-raising campaigns could be conducted by governments and private organizations alike to introduce the public to the harms of water pollution, and recycling practices could be endorsed and cultivated in the public. These steps encourage the right mindset toward the pollution of water, and in the long term they make a noteworthy difference.
Like the pollution of water, air pollution happens in many different ways. The millions of cars operating in the world on an hourly basis emit harmful fumes into the air, and factories around the world similarly release gases and fumes that pollute the air. This pollution has had a profound effect on human health; in some polluted cities in the world, the constant inhaling of polluted air is the carcinogenic equivalent of smoking several cigarettes, and the rates of respiratory illnesses as well as other health conditions have been shown to be significantly higher in polluted cities. This form of pollution, too, can be combated by the intervention of the government and the education of the public. Governments can impose limits on the levels of toxicity cars and factories can emit, and they can endorse the development and use of electric cars, such as those produced by Tesla, which do not pollute the air. The public, too, can be educated about the health detriments of air pollution so that they become more invested in finding solutions to the issue. The reduction of air pollution can vary significantly benefit the health of human populations — in China, a government-spearheaded “War on Pollution” saw an increase in the average human lifespan in just a few short years.
Next paragraph is on soil pollution
soil pollution and effects
An idea
What is it?
Causes and consequences
Solutions
Similarly, soil pollution is closely related to the first two types of pollution, since they are all caused by similar activities, like deforestation
Next paragraph is on preventions and solutions: use the articles to support your ideas.
