The Participant Observation: Interviewing with students and teachers

* Interview Protocol Due October 2, 2018

You will formulate a set of interview questions you will use in your study. These will be shared with your classmates during class time on October 2nd for feedback. You will then revise accordingly and submit on October 2nd. More details will be provided in class.

*Data Collection and Memos Due December 1, 2018

For your research project, you will be expected to do a total minimum of 6 hours of participant observation at your field site (ideally, these will occur over 3 different visits, creating 3 separate sets of fieldnotes) and interviews with a minimum of 2 research participants. You may also collect archival material or artifacts that may be relevant to your project and you would like to use for your analysis. However, everyone’s site, access, and context will be different, so we will work together to figure out what makes the most sense for your particular project. Copies of transcripts, fieldnotes, and lists of archival material will be submitted to me for grading, along with 1-2-page memos for each. More details will be provided in class.

*Research Proposal Due December 3, 2018

You will develop a 10-13-page proposal that draws from the semester’s work and data collection to propose a 4-month research study. It will include the following: Introduction and research question; Rationale/Significance; Brief overview of the bodies of literature that inform your project and that your project will contribute to; Description of your site and research techniques; Articulating and supporting your preliminary analytical themes. More details will be provided in class.
