Researching in the Library
As described at the beginning of this section in the library, “The Trefry Library subscribes to a large number of licensed resources - like article databases, scholarly journals and eBook collections, exclusively for AMU/APU students, faculty and staff. These are resources that have been hand selected to support college-level research for each degree program offered here at American Public University System.” Furthermore (from the same library page), “It is important to understand that research requires time, practice, and patience. It is a process of identifying and evaluating relevant resources. With time, you will learn where to go to find the information that you need, and the process will become less difficult.” Keep scrolling down and you will find lots of “Before you get started” videos and “Tutorials, Tools, and Tips.” There is a great deal of information here. Do not become frustrated. You do not have to understand every aspect of the library by the end of this lesson, or ever for that matter. Keep exploring and growing your library and research skills as you continue your academic journey. Probably by now you are understanding why a comment like “there isn’t much information in our library” is not accurate. In spite of the massive amount of information to which you were just introduced, you will find something surprisingly simple.

Quick and Easy Research
You do not have to achieve the skill level of an online university librarian or research professor to be able to conduct good academic research yourself. When you write an essay that requires research, such as our Ted Kennedy example, try this. (Please do not do this instead of learning and practicing all that we have covered above. This is a quick list that should go along with the aforementioned material. Notice how simple it can be to find a good source in our library.)
01 Go to the home page of the library. Using the “Everything” search bar, type in Ted Kennedy. (Many results will be displayed so, if you wish, you can narrow them down them by typing in more words into the search bar like Ted Kennedy Civil Rights.)
02
At the left of the screen, click on peer-reviewed journals. (Peer-reviewed means that the work was evaluated, prior to publication, and approved by subject-matter experts of that particular field of study. This is an indication of a scholarly publication. Other indicators of scholarly work include formal language, bibliography, original.research, quotes from primary sources, etc.)
03 The following article was so easy to find. It was on page one. (By the way, if you become unhappy with your topic or research results, simply change your topic.

Looking Ahead
In the next lesson, you will take the next writing step. You will learn when, how, and why to incorporate your newly learned information into your writing. You will learn about Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA), two of the most commonly used formatting styles.
