What’s Scholarly and what’s not
In brief, scholarly work is:
written by experts for experts
based on original research or intellectual inquiry
provides citations for all sources used
is usually peer reviewed prior to publication
For example: peer-reviewed journal articles
Popular sources
While many of your research projects will require you to read articles published in scholarly journals, books or other peer reviewed source of information, there is also a wealth of information to be found in more popular publications. These aim to inform a wide array of readers about issues of interest and are much more informal in tone and scope. Examples include general news, business and entertainment publications such as Time Magazine, Business Weekly, Vanity Fair.
Note, special interest publications which are not specifically written for an academic audience are also considered "popular" i.e., National Geographic, Scientific American, Psychology Today.

In-text citations
How to write quotes within a paragraph…
Quotes should be interwoven into sentences.
When referring to the source itself, use the present tense. Use the author writes or Pagis writes, “………”
Example #1
According to a Comparison of 3 Methods of Onychectomy, Onychectomy is defined as “an elective surgery that requires the removal of the third phalanx that renders cats unable to scratch” (Clark 255).
Example # 2
Germany, for instance, was no stranger to anti-Semitism as their rural gentry was known to be anti-Semites (Singer 405). Even before Luther published his pamphlet, the Jews had been expelled from Brandenburg, and after his publication in 1543, more sanctions were placed on Jews, including restrictions for travel, commerce and protection (405).
Example # 3
On page four, Rosa’s complexion is ‘bleak’ and ‘dark like cholera, which the author applies another rhetorical device- the simile- to liken the physiological with disease. The motif of opposites is then seen when Rosa’s choleric complexion is juxtaposed against Magda’s “eyes blue as air, smooth feathers of hair nearly as yellow as the Star sewn into Rosa’s coat” (4).
