Guidelines for Preparing a Research Project

How to get started:

1. Choose a topic: Select a learning objective from the chapters covered in the course.

2. Do your research.

· You must have at least five outside research sources. These should be from industry or scholarly sources.

· Collect specific quotes you want to use from these resources.

3. Narrow your topic: Pick one major point to explore in more depth. It should be something which you found new, interesting or controversial. Find at least two viewpoints on this point and decide which you will support.

4. State a thesis: In one or two sentences, describe the argument of your paper. Do not just summarize the research and give your personal opinion. State an arguable point, which is specific to the topic.

5. Outline your report: You should start with an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement. The body of the paper should discuss the issue you have selected and your evaluation of that point. Provide at least five outside sources to support your point from credible research. Your final paragraph should restate your thesis statement.

6. Write: Create a first draft. At this point get the ideas down on paper. Revise and refine in a second draft. Let it sit then reread, revise and refine.

7. Edit and proofread: Word does a good job but is not perfect.

8. Cite your sources: Do not copy others work but use others work to help form and support your opinion. Plagiarism will earn you an F.

9. Create an Executive Summary: This is a half-page summary that states the thesis and the major point developed in the paper.
