As many of you have observed, A Mercy is a novel that requires some return and re-reading. Now that you have finished reading the novel, return to the episode when Jacob Vaark (of New York, as everyone knows!) encounters Florens. Re-read pages 25 to 32 ("Dessert . . . conscience for coin"). What stands out to you about the content and / or style of this chapter that you didn't notice as much -- or understand -- upon first reading this part of the book? And what new thoughts or observations do you have on Morrison's potential motives for telling the narrative as a whole in this particular style?
