Looking at the infographic, the social change theme that resonates with my life and decision would be the purposeful participant. Looking at the decisions I have made throughout my career has shown that I am a purposeful participant. Working with HIV/AIDS nonprofit organizations, working with mothers who battle with postpartum depression and other mental health issues, working with the homeless population and helping people across the lifespan find a home, and then deciding to become a NICU nurse because of a personal experience. Even now, I am deciding to go back to school to work with those impacted by mental health issues and help them find a quality of life.

I root for the underdogs and the individuals that society shies away from or keeps hidden. I am drawn to those who are often ignored or thrown a bone to get them to shut up for a moment. The best way to relate to others is through their vulnerabilities and flaws. I appreciate Walden and the professors and staff for allowing that mission to continue and recognizing that we are allowing room for significant change to occur through educating ourselves and each other. These changes are not only changes that will happen in health care but in all aspects of humanity. A quote that I live by is “When you drop a pebble into a pond, ripples spread out, changing all the water in the pool. The ripples hit the shore and rebound, bumping into one another, breaking each other apart. In some small way, the pond is never the same again.”  Neal Shusterman

The principle of social change is why I continue my education and have the aspirations and dreams I have. Knowing that you could make a difference in someone’s life without ever crossing paths with you or remembering who you are. Knowing that you saved a child who will grow up to become what the world needs is worth thriving for. In hindsight, we do not ever look at it this way because we are told to be humble, but we are genuine heroes for going into a profession where we get to see the changes that we make. With each discharge, smile and thank you are examples of the principle of social change that we should follow. We are in a profession that allows us to participate in what we need to help humanity grow.
